Complete Course in Personal Property Appraising Now Available Online

(Frederick, MD – February 20, 2001) – Professional Certified Appraiser David Maloney, ISA CAPP has announced that the first-ever online course in personal property appraising is now available on the Internet through the Association of Online Appraisers (AOA) at www.aoaonline.org/lintro.htm. Having written and taught appraisal courses in the US and Canada for the past several years, Maloney recognized the need for an innovative, self-paced, comprehensive and easily-maintained course that would be available to the online student in a distance education format at a reasonable cost. "Other personal property appraisal courses offered today can be incomplete, out-of-date, inconvenient and expensive to take," stated Maloney. "By using the Internet to present this material in an online format, we can ensure the student the latest and most accurate information available. Plus, overhead costs are minimized, and those savings can be passed on to the student." Course registration is free for charter AOA members. Membership in the AOA (www.aoaonline.org) is $60 per year. Neophytes can join the AOA as Candidate Members and still take advantage of the online course at no additional charge.

Maloney's monumental work is entitled the "Complete Online Course in Personal Property Appraising." Over 550 pages in length and completely searchable by keywords, the course focuses on the theory, principles and methodology that is common to appraising any category of personal property including common residential contents, antiques, collectibles, fine art, and gems & jewelry. Included, among other topics, are lessons covering the three approaches to value, ethics, report writing standards, terminology, value definitions, USPAP, types of appraisals, issues relating to doing online appraisals, limiting conditions and extraordinary assumptions, appraisal formats, research techniques, identification and authentication, how to describe property, and the uses for appraisals including for insurance, estate, equitable division, donation and others. Also included are sample appraisal reports for traditional as well as online appraisals. There are even 100+ hot web sites for the appraiser.

Students are placed on an electronic distribution list to receive periodic course-related newsletters via email. For those wishing appraisal credentials, passing the two online exams earns the student Accredited Member status in the Association of Online Appraisers. Fulfilling additional requirements earns Certified Member status.
