RSS FEEDS and PODCASTS
RSS FEEDS
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, and it provides an easy way to gather and display information from varied and multiple sources, including news stories, updates to Web sites, business and stock statistics, and new posts to blogs.
You may have noticed the little orange RSS icons inviting you to "subscribe" on some of the sites you visit regularly. Does this look familiar
? or this
? Websites let you know that they offer RSS News Feeds by displaying little icons such as these. Clicking the button will add that feed to your feed reader list and will ensure that you receive updated notifications and contents from that site automatically.
RSS is a timesaver. You can subscribe to RSS feeds for those sites in which you are interested and the new articles will be delivered to you automatically as they become available!
Think of RSS feeds as targeted headlines for Web surfing. Each feed contains a list of new articles from a site with a title, summary, and link to the full article for each item. So, if you are interested in reading a particular article that has just been posted to one of your favorite sites, you simply click the corresponding link.
To read these feeds, you need a tool called a feed reader or news aggregator such as the application-based Feedreader or even your email client, Outlook. Web-based feed readers are also built into the popular web browsers such as Internet Explorer and Firefox.
Here is a list of our RSS feeds.
PODCASTS
Podcasts are an audio version of our RSS Feeds for listening-on-the-go. Your computer will automatically download our audio files from podcast feeds to which you subscribe for easy loading on your media player.
First, you'll need to download and install the right software to 'subscribe' to our podcasts. Try Juice - it's free. (There are many others, including iTunes. Search for 'podcast software' or 'media aggregator rss' to find more options.)
Once you've have a program installed, give the program the address of the feed to which you want to subscribe. That's it! Now your podcast software will automatically check to see when we've uploaded new material, and will automatically download the files and insert them into your media player software. Most podcast programs will also let you choose to simply place the downloaded files in a folder -- a good option if you'd prefer to manage the files yourself.
Apple's iTunes software will also easily subscribe you to podcasts. You can find us in the iTunes Store. Launch iTunes on your computer, click on the Podcast tab and search for "Maloney" to find the free "Hot Tips for the Personal Property Appraiser by Dave Maloney."
