| Author Dale Cathell Peaks
Kiwanis Interest on Latest Novel
Native Worcester County author and retired Maryland State Supreme Court of Appeals Judge, Dale Cathell, a longtime resident of Ocean Pines, MD, shared some background information about his latest novel, Empires of the Crab with the members of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Ocean Pines/Ocean City at a recent weekly meeting. It was fascinating to hear about the crab industry that pervades the Eastern Shore peninsula and how local entrepreneurs from Hoopers Island, the Phillips family, started with their single crab packing plant and subsequently created a world wide empire in the crab industry. This novel, unlike the previous two novels, namely From Lands Over and Scent of Lilacs, is the non fiction story of the Phillips family. Kiwanians were able to purchase the book after the meeting. Many looked forward to some very interesting reading about the area where they reside and an industry from which they derive untold gastronomical pleasures. Pictured is club president, Al Kastner, thanking Dale Cathell for his presentation. |

| Diakonia Thanks Kiwanis
for Support Diakonia Director, Claudia Nagel, spoke to the local Kiwanis Club about their mission which the local Kiwanis Club of Greater Ocean Pines/Ocean City supports with donations during the year. Diakonia, a Greek word meaning "In service to others", is a local organization with a small budget of less than $400,000 a year, in addition to donations from the community. It provides meals, shelter, and support to those in need, on a temporary basis while assisting them to re-establish their lives. Diakonia has 40 to 45 beds and provides service 24 hours a day all 365 days a year for local people in Worcester County. In one year they provide about 10,000 bed nights, 28,000 meals and 4000 bags of groceries on that small budget. How, you might ask? Mostly from the donations of the people and organizations in the community. Claudia, who worked with the homeless in NY for some 35 years before relocating to the Ocean City area, told the Kiwanians she has never experienced a more generous, gracious, supportive community than that of Worcester County, to whom she and her organization are most grateful for their volunteerism and donations. The hardest thing Claudia has to do, is say no to someone in need, which they have had to do for almost 600 people so far in 2007. However, Diakonia does try to work with other organizations in the area to secure some assistance if Diakonia can not provide it. |

| Getting
the Word out About the 3rd Annual Walk to D'Feet ALS
It was a busy Labor Day weekend and there were yard sales everywhere in Ocean Pines/MD, but none was as unique as the one at the home of Fred and Kay Heinlen in Teal Bay. Not only were they selling their wares and whatnots, but they were selling awareness for the upcoming 3rd Annual Walk to D'feet ALS on Saturday October 6th at the OP Swim & Racquet Club. Why? Because Fred lost his beloved sister to the dreaded disease in 2006. Fred and Kay are active members of the committee to plan and carry out the important fundraiser to raise money to find a cure and to provide help for those who are suffering from the dreaded disease. Pictured from left to right are Kay & Fred and Kiwanis member and head organizer for the walk, from day one, Ken McLaughlin. Check out that sign. In order to find out more about the 3rd Annual Walk to D'feet ALS, go to the DC/MD/VA Chapter for ALS website at www.ALSinfo.org and sign up to walk, form a team, be a part of an existing team, and pledge funds to the event. |
