Clean-Up Day in Southern Maryland
by Glynnis Schmidt

Calling all Kiwanis Family members from Southern Maryland and throughout the Capital District! You are cordially invited to participate in the 3rd Annual Greenwell State Park Clean-Up Day and Welcome Back Picnic for Service Leadership Programs. The event will take place Saturday, September 29, 2007. Cleanup begins at 9:00 a.m., with picnic lunch to follow at 12:00 noon, at Greenwell State Park in Hollywood, Maryland.

This event is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of St. Mary's County. It is a great interclub opportunity for all levels of the Kiwanis family! Clean up work typically consists of planting trees, mulching, maintaining wheelchair accessible nature trails, maintaining flower beds, etc. Greenwell State Park has a mission to be all-accessible to all physically challenged visitors, and they sponsor a therapeutic horseback riding program for people with disabilities. So there may also be an opportunity to assist with maintaining barns, paddock fences, etc. No special skills or tools are required, but please wear long pants, sturdy shoes or work boots, and bring work gloves. A picnic lunch is provided to all volunteers in appreciation of their efforts to help maintain the park, and to welcome back students in Kiwanis Service Leadership Programs who are returning for a new year of service, leadership and fellowship!

Please RSVP by September 22 to St. Mary's SLP Chairperson, Glynnis Schmidt, at (301) 737-6311 or bwsges@yahoo.com. Please have one person respond with headcount for groups or clubs. DIRECTIONS, from Northern St. Mary's County: Take Route 5 South to Mechanicsville. At the traffic light at Wawa (intersection of Routes 5 and 235), stay straight onto Route 235 South continuing toward Hollywood. Go about 10 miles and turn left onto Route 245 East / Sotterly Road. After 2 miles turn right on Steer Horn Neck Road. Park entrance is 1 mile ahead on left.
