The Kiwanis Club of Mercury 64 recently held their 43rd Annual Teacher's Breakfast to welcome new teachers to the Hampton City School System. The event was attended by over 200 people and included welcoming remarks by Hampton City School Superintendent, Dr. Patrick Russo, and Hampton School Board Chairman, (Dr. ?) Fred Brewer. All new teachers were introduced by club members of Mercury 64 as well as the By the Bay club. Baxter Simmons, from Mercury 64, wowed the crowd again by introducing from memory guests at two tables giving their names, the school where they will teach and the subject they will teach. He has done this for many years and it remains a highlight of the breakfast. Mercury 64 charter member, Dr. Bernie Friedland, who has attended all 43 Teacher's Breakfasts, compared this breakfast with hundreds in attendance to one of the first where there were only a handful of new teachers joining the school system.
