Key Leader Program Underway
As I write this article for the Builder, the Capital District is about to hold its very first Key Leader Weekend. All statistics point to it being one of the most successful initial weekends ever held. With only a few days left to register, 35 students are already on board. Included in that number are five Key Club officers who have stepped up to the plate and volunteered to serve as the very first Student Facilitators. They are Anne Elder from Virginia Beach, Terrance Clark of Largo, Carolyn McCauley from Christ Church School, Emily Engberg and Hyo bin Sung both from The Salisbury School in Maryland. These students will cover the leadership curriculum at the same time they will be practicing great leadership skills as they each head up break-out neighborhoods. more

Kiwanis International President Nelson Tucker Visits the Capital District to Receive an Award From "Reading Is Fundamental, Inc."
By Immed. Past Gov. Bob Cressy

The internationally known organization "Reading Is Fundamental" (RIF) held its Third Annual Gift of Reading Awards Gala on September 21st at the Andrew H. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, DC. Three 2007 Honorees were feted including Kiwanis International for our contributions of close to 200 RIF programs throughout the world. Many Kiwanis clubs in the Capital District participate in the RIF program under the "Young Children, Priority One" service project, which aims to help children form birth to age five.

Accepting the awards for Kiwanis was none other than our 2006-2007 Kiwanis International President Nelson Tucker with his First Lady Alva. Presenting the award to Kiwanis and President Nelson was Lynda Johnson Robb, RIF Chairman Emerita, who spoke eloquently of "Kiwanis involvement with Reading Is Fundamental as one of its Kiwanis' designated partners. Thanks to the dedication of Kiwanians nationwide, thousands of kids each year get to experience the joy of choosing a book for their very own."

President Nelson was equally eloquent in accepting the award and highlighting our Kiwanis organization, the services we provide throughout the world and describing what we mean with our motto of "Serving the Children of the World". It was an elegant, black tie evening. Lynda Johnson Robb is the wife of United States Senator Charles Robb and the daughter of the late President Lyndon Johnson and Lady Bird Johnson. By the way, RIF Vice President of Education and Literacy Programs, Gabrielle Miller, was an excellent guest speaker at the 2007 CKI District Convention in Charlottesville.

The Capital District was honored to have President Nelson and First Lady Alva visit us and to be with them at the ceremony. Incidentally the other two award honorees were the Verizon Corporation and The Washington Post. Please see the photos accompanying this article.

Lynda Johnson Robb, Reading Is Fundamental Chairman Emerita, praised Kiwanis International as a 2007 Honoree at the Third Annual "Gift of Reading Awards Gala" at the Andrew H. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, DC, on September 21st. She presented the prestigious award to 2006-2007 Kiwanis International President Nelson Tucker at the black tie gala dinner.
Kiwanis International President Nelson Tucker eloquently addresses the attendees with an excellent presentation of the Kiwanis meaning of the motto "Serving the Children of the World."
