Division 14 held a picnic
for the children at Sarah's House at Fort Meade, MD
on Saturday, September 29th. Sarah's House serves homeless
people who are underemployed and in debt, have been
abandoned or battered, are temporarily or permanently
disabled, have lost control of an addition, or have
suffered a medical crisis. They are generally isolated
and lack supportive relationships. Many have two or
three children, most of who are under age seven.
There was a total of about 80 people there including 13 Kiwanians, 10 Key Club members from Arundel High, and 12 CKI members from the U. of MD Circle K Club. The workers present were from the Kiwanis club of Ellicott City, Mountain Road, Prince Georges County, Severna Park, Odenton, and Crofton. The Columbia club provided soda for the people. The Key Club and CKI members entertained the kids while the food was prepared. The menu consisted of the usual picnic food - hot dogs, hamburgers, slaw, salad, and chips. The desert was topped of with ice cream Sundays. The weather was perfect and the entire event was deemed a huge success. This was the first Division Service Project done in several years. At the Division Council meeting, several different projects were discussed but the members decided that Sarah's House was the most needed. Sarah's House is a unique partnership between Anne Arundel County, the U.S. Army, and Catholic Charities. Sarah's House provides individuals and families who are homeless the hospitality of two temporary supportive housing programs. All guests are referred to Sarah's House by the Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services.
