Poquoson
Club Pays 9-11 Tribute
by

| The Kiwanis Club of Poquoson paid tribute to 9-11 victims, heroes, and survivors by lining the streets of Poquoson with 30 american flags on Tuesday September 11. The Club has been displaying the flags on patriotic holidays for more than 20 years but many Poquoson residents are unaware how the flags get there. Club members gather at 7:00 a.m. to load the flags into two trucks and drive down both sides of Wythe Creek Road to erect the flags, returning at 4:30 p.m. to remove and store them. Volunteers remove plastic plugs from sections of pipe in the ground, marked by white paint on the curbs, and insert the flags. Club member "Chip" Petre, a retired U.S. Navy Commander, maintains the pipe sleeves and plugs every year, removing and cleaning them and replacing broken ones. He also replaces worn flags as needed. The St. Kateri Tekakwitha Parish Thrift Shop provides storage for the flags free of charge. |
