Key Leader Program Underway
As I write this article for the Builder, the Capital District is about to hold its very first Key Leader Weekend. All statistics point to it being one of the most successful initial weekends ever held. With only a few days left to register, 35 students are already on board. Included in that number are five Key Club officers who have stepped up to the plate and volunteered to serve as the very first Student Facilitators. They are Anne Elder from Virginia Beach, Terrance Clark of Largo, Carolyn McCauley from Christ Church School, Emily Engberg and Hyo bin Sung both from The Salisbury School in Maryland. These students will cover the leadership curriculum at the same time they will be practicing great leadership skills as they each head up break-out neighborhoods. more

"The Kiwanis Club of The Dulles Area" Formally Chartered on September 30th
Five New District Kiwanis Clubs formed in 2006-2007

by Immed. Past Gov. Bob Cressy

A new idea for a new kind of Kiwanis club was a wonderful success on the last day of the Kiwanis administrative year. If you like being outdoors on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, with a great BBQ of pork and chicken and all the fixin's, and a fine gathering of new Kiwanians and guests, then you really would have liked this Charter ceremony for the new Kiwanis Club of The Dulles Area.

This new club will be better and more easily known as the "Dulles Area Kiwanis" club and is truly representative of the 'new' Kiwanis. The club will meet on Sunday afternoons at 4 PM to accommodate members' work and family schedules. And speaking of families, there are already seven Kiwanis couples - husband and wives - in this new club, and of course they had their new idea Charter ceremony at Algonkian Regional Park in Sterling, VA. Now that was a good idea! They have been thinking outside the 'Kiwanis box' from the beginning and it demonstrates there are virtually no limits on how creative organizers can be in forming a new Kiwanis Club. The "DAK" held its organizational meeting on August 5th which was chaired by New Club Building Chairman and now Governor Elect Tom Ganse. Great job Tom.

Guided by PG John Tyner, the sponsoring Arlington Kiwanis Club with PG Warren Kane, Arlington President Alan Tonelson, PG Ed Novak and the new DAK leadership team, led the way in forming this new club. This is EXCITING! Photos of the day show the charter officers and members and the great day for our most recently chartered club. The Capital District has had a strong year in new club building, with thanks to many. The new clubs are the Kiwanis Clubs of Potomac, and the Kiwanis Club of Bel Air, both in Maryland, the Toano Kiwanis Club and Dulles Area Kiwanis, both in Virginia, and the newest club the Kiwanis Club of Charlotte Hall, in St. Mary's County, Maryland. All were organized in 2006-2007. Charlotte Hall will hold its formal Charter Night November 6th.

The 'Dulles Area Kiwanis' Club was formally chartered on September 30th at a Charter Picnic at Algonkian Regional Park on the Potomac River. Charter President and veteran Kiwanian Heather Talbert is presented with the official charter from Kiwanis International by Capital District Governor Bob Cressy.
Charter Officers of the Dulles Area Kiwanis Club, shown with Governor Bob, are (L to R) Charter President Heather Talbert, with daughter Maggie (not yet a member), Heather's mom, Charter officers President Elect Beryl Young, Secretary Kate Richards, and Treasurer Brendan Young. Beryl is also past president of CKI at William & Mary College. The K-Family tradition works. Beryl and Brendan are also one of the seven club couples. Good idea!
Governor Designate (now Governor) Art Riley presents charter pins to President Heather and husband Jeff Talbert, another new Kiwanis family couple, with Maggie. When do we sign her up?
The Charter members pose at the Charter Picnic. Being a charter member is a unique and honored event. Note the Kiwanis tee shirts. Pays to advertise ... at picnics, too!
Every new club requires a sponsoring club. President Alan Tonelson of the Arlington, VA, club accepts the KI sponsor patch for their honor's banner for their support by Past Governor John Tyner, who is a District's new club building organizational leader. They led the way for the new charter
The Key Club of Park View High School helps with the raffle and door prize tickets at the charter picnic.
