Key Leader Program Underway
As I write this article for the Builder, the Capital District is about to hold its very first Key Leader Weekend. All statistics point to it being one of the most successful initial weekends ever held. With only a few days left to register, 35 students are already on board. Included in that number are five Key Club officers who have stepped up to the plate and volunteered to serve as the very first Student Facilitators. They are Anne Elder from Virginia Beach, Terrance Clark of Largo, Carolyn McCauley from Christ Church School, Emily Engberg and Hyo bin Sung both from The Salisbury School in Maryland. These students will cover the leadership curriculum at the same time they will be practicing great leadership skills as they each head up break-out neighborhoods. more

In the Spotlight - Doris Rogers Montgomery
by Rosemary Cummings, Chair, CPR-M Committee

Meet Doris Rogers Montgomery (right), a member of the Greater Landover Kiwanis Club in Maryland. Doris' husband, Joseph, brought her in as a Kiwanis member 23 years ago. Doris is a retired Government employee (now self-employed), a past Club President, and past Division 1 Lieutenant Governor. She is the chairperson for her Club's 13th annual Mardi Gras Scholarship Fundraiser program, where the Club has presented 36 Debutantes over the last 13 years and presented over $36,000 in scholarships monies. Her other project is Bingo at the Millium Nursing home every second Saturday of each month.

Doris is a special Kiwanian in many ways and more so in the past Kiwanian year. Since October 1, 2006, Doris brought in eleven new members to her Club, making it 25 new members sponsored since she became a member herself. Doris is truly a people person and enjoys meeting new friends. She said, "This is one reason why I love Kiwanis. I have met a lot of wonderful friends in Kiwanis. I am a leader and I also like to follow in the steps of positive people, many of whom I have met in the Capital District". She is also involved in other organizations. You may remember reading in the October 2006 E-Builder about Lt. Gov. Doris, when at a NARFE Convention in Albuquerque NM, she and other DC visitors attended a local Kiwanis meeting. Doris filled in as impromptu guest speaker when she spoke about a new program she implemented in the Capital District. When asked for her technique in bringing new members, she said, "JUST ASK! - providing I feel they are Kiwanis Material and would be an asset to my club. What can one say, but no!" The new members she brought in are Angela R. Rogers (daughter), Donna Weldon, Dewayne Weldon, Stella Odonngenia, Kinda Davis, Sonya Jones, Astril Harewoon, Kia Gardner, John Gray, Irene Wilson, and Gene Lawrence. She says, "Kiwanis is my family; this is my Light, What Yours? Peace."
