Key Leader Program Underway
As I write this article for the Builder, the Capital District is about to hold its very first Key Leader Weekend. All statistics point to it being one of the most successful initial weekends ever held. With only a few days left to register, 35 students are already on board. Included in that number are five Key Club officers who have stepped up to the plate and volunteered to serve as the very first Student Facilitators. They are Anne Elder from Virginia Beach, Terrance Clark of Largo, Carolyn McCauley from Christ Church School, Emily Engberg and Hyo bin Sung both from The Salisbury School in Maryland. These students will cover the leadership curriculum at the same time they will be practicing great leadership skills as they each head up break-out neighborhoods. more

Division 17 Celebrates
by Betty Gardiner

Lt. Governor Betty Gardiner and Dist. Past Lt. Governor Bernie Gardiner hosted a Thank You Dinner for all Presidents, Division Chairpersons, Past Lt. Governors and other honored guests at the Clubhouse in Leisure World in September.
This was the final meeting and dinner of the Division Council for 2006-2007 and was well attended. Governor Bob and Nancy Cressy, and Key Club Lt. Governor Brent Abel were in attendance. (right are Betty Gardiner, Brent Abel and Bob Cressy). Past Governors Scott Brewer and John Tyner, as always, were there for us.
(Right) The president of Bethesda (John Ratnavale), Leisure World (Anita McFarlane), Mid-Montgomery (Maureen Miller), Montgomery Village (Liz Jackson), Olney (Ted Strahan), Potomac (Jim Chandler), Rockville (Barbara Luerig PE for Beth Homan), Rossmoor (Ed Brown and Debbie Macon) reviewed their club years. It was outstanding and well received by all.

The chairmen that served Division 17 for 2006-2007 were all given thanks, appreciation and certificates for their involvement during the year. There were many great accomplishments for the year. All clubs had a least one Young Children: Priority One project. There were many fundraisers and a Kiwanis Family Day with all of our Service Leadership Program Clubs, all Kiwanis Clubs and prospective members working and having fun together.

(Right) Four Distinguished Service Awards were presented to the backbone of the Division and Advisor to the Lt. Governor. These Kiwanians don't know how to say "NO"; it is always "YES I can help."

(Right) Tina McKendree was presented a Life Membership Award by Stanley Miller, Capital District Foundation, Trustee, Div. 17. She was selected as Division Seventeen's Kiwanian of the Year. Tina was a past member of the Gaithersburg Club and now the Potomac Club where she chaired many outstanding service programs.

All of the Past Lt. Governors were invited to attend and be recognized for their past support of Division Seventeen. We know without the support of these past leaders it would hard to maintain and grow in the Division. Paul Sheets a past leader of Div. 17 and his wife Marie honored us with their presence; Paul is now a member of the Suburban Frederick club. It was a wonderful night to thank these Past Lt. Governors (two Past Governors) for their service to our Division over the years.

(Right) I am a little embarrassed to give this part of our story but it was very special. Jeanne Smith, Membership and Growth Chairperson had the floor and asked presidents, division chairmen and past officers to come up behind the podium. I couldn't figure out what was going to happen. Jeanne presented a Kiwanis International George F. Hixson Fellow Award to me. It was made of paper and had a ribbon on it. The real one will follow soon. This was from the Division Seventeen. Thank You So Much. What a great year we all have had.
