1st Key Leader Weekend a Success!
by Babs Lee

Thirty-nine High School students from around the Capital District came to Camp Letts near Annapolis on Friday afternoon Oct. 5th. Thirty-nine trained, energized, and enthusiastic student leaders left at noon two days later. The very first Key Leader Weekend in the Capital District, was, by all indications, a rousing success. The weather was perfect for the challenging ropes course. The lead facilitator, Patrick Maurer of San Hose, CA, was awesome and inspiring. New friendships emerged. However, from an adult observation, the most exciting part was watching the young participants bloom and grow into strong, dedicated individuals committed to bring about positive changes, not only in their own lives but also for the betterment of their communities.

Three Capital District Key Club officers took on the role of Student Facilitators. They were Anne Elder of Virginia Beach, Carolyn Macauley of Christ Church School, and Terrance Clark of Largo, MD. Joining these magnificent three were two equally amazing students from The Salisbury School, Erin Dayton-Jones, an alumnae of HOBY, and Easton Wilkins. These incredible students practiced their leadership skills and led the Neighborhood break-out sessions.

Fourteen Kiwanis Clubs earned a banner patch for sponsoring two or more students. Chesapeake Club topped the list with 4 participants, followed by Winchester with 3 students plus their two Key Club advisors. Kiwanis Clubs sponsoring two students included Arlington, Bayside, Denbeigh, Eastern Branch (along with three Eastern Branch members including its President Marcell Robinson), Harrisonburg (the very first club to register students last April), Manassas, Ocean Pines, Reisterstown, Severna Park, St. Mary's County, Tysons Corner, and Waldorf.

You will hear more from the student participants over the next few months as they bring testimonials to you via the eBuilder. Meanwhile, the Key Leader Team will be exploring the possibility of holding the second Key Leader Weekend in late April or early May of 2008. As we have outgrown the meeting facilities at Camp Letts, we must find a new camp with a larger meeting room. You suggestions would gladly by considered by The Team!
