Mount Airy MS Mentoring Program Continues to Draw Recognition
by Bill Butts

Diane DeAtley, counselor at Mt. Airy Middle School, has been selected as one of Maryland's Counselors of the Year. Ms. DeAtley was recognized at a special luncheon at the Sheraton Hotel in Columbia on October 19, hosted by the Maryland School Counselors Association. Ms. DeAtley's selection was boosted by the Mentoring Program that she has started at Mt. Airy Middle School with support from Mount Airy Kiwanis.

The program currently includes 12 adult mentors and 13 student mentees at the Middle School and additionally, 6 seventh graders from the Middle School who are mentoring six second graders at nearby Parrs Ridge Elementary. These mentoring programs are funded by Mt. Airy Kiwanis as a means to help meet the needs of local children and enrich their lives. Pictured (Left to Right) are: Stephanie Dahlquist-President-Elect of Mt. Airy Kiwanis and currently a volunteer mentor at the Middle School, Ms. DeAtley; and Glee Butts, Youth Services Chairperson for Mt. Airy Kiwanis. For more information, contact: Glee Butts at 301-829-8827.
