Major Eric Magnell Speaks at Bethesda Club

Major Eric Magnell, US Army, spoke to the Kiwanis Club of Bethesda in October about his experiences serving in support of Operation Iraq. Maj. Magnell, currently serving as an administrative law attorney in the Office of the Judge Advocate General at the Pentagon, is a Bronze Star Medal recipient. He spoke about why he joined the military including the chance to get a good education at West Point. After a few years as an engineer he decided to go to law school at the University of Virginia, with the Army paying his way. He served in Germany and Iraq, pointing out that "in Iraq the soldiers were so busy with the mission that they didn't have time to get in as much trouble as in Germany." Maj. Magnell is responsible for giving advice to the Commanders about Geneva/Hague convention, and for processing Iraqi claims against the US for damage from non-combat incidents. He also helped the Iraq people rebuild their court system and said "one of the most gratifying experiences was advising the Iraqis on their election."
