Lexington
Park K-Kids & Builders Club Make Valentines for Senior Citizens
by Glynnis Schmidt
Student members of the
Kiwanis K-Kids Club at Lexington Park Elementary School
and the Kiwanis Builders Club at Spring Ridge Middle
School created Valentine's Day cards in February that
were delivered to the senior citizen residents at the
Bayside Nursing Home in Great Mills. Both clubs are
Service Leadership Programs sponsored by the Kiwanis
Club of St. Mary's County, and are part of the Boys & Girls Club after-school program at those schools. This is the third year in
a row that the K-Kids have created special Valentines
for the Bayside residents, and the children enjoy this
special annual service project.
Members of the Circle K Club at St. Mary's College of Maryland, who serve as mentors to the K-Kids & Builders Club during their weekly meetings and service projects, supported the K-Kids & Builders Clubs in this Valentines project. One special aspect of the cards was thought of by the Circle K Committee on K-Kids - instead of attaching a piece of candy to each card, a decaffeinated gourmet tea-bag was taped to the Valentine. This was thoughtful since many of the seniors could be on restricted or diabetic menus. From Kindergarten through Fifth Grade, the K-Kids and Builders cut, pasted, and colored some very creative and thoughtful cards that certainly brightened the day of the residents at Bayside!
Glynnis Schmidt serves as the Service Leadership Programs Committee Chair within the Kiwanis Club of St. Mary's County. She attended the K-Kids meeting on February 7 when the Valentines were made. "The children were so proud of their Valentines. They beamed from ear to ear when I asked to see their cards and pose for a picture. They took careful time to create beautiful cards, and they looked forward to the senior citizens being surprised by the tea bags that made this year's cards unique." The members of the Builders Club took a field trip to deliver the cards to the nursing home, and stayed to play bingo and socialize with the residents.
