2nd Key-Leader Weekend a Success!
by Helen Maloney

April
25-27, 2008 was my second time at Key-Leader. The first
was as a new participant last October. This time I
returned as a facilitator and enjoyed working alongside
the adults
to make the weekend at Arlington Echo Education Center
in Millersville, MD special for the first-timers. Every
high schooler student should be able to experience
Key-Leader. We are able to work with and understand different
personality
types - something that will be important to us as we
enter the adult world and workplace. The information
we learned
that weekend is even being taught to 50 year-old business
owners, so, in reality, Key-Leader participants are
getting about a 30 year head start in that area! Our leader,
Chris, brought his own style of explaining important
concepts
from the adult's point of view. Mrs. Lee, Mr. Dudey,
Mrs.
Holley and the other Kiwanis adult organizers and helpers
were good role models for us and were easy to get along
with. We were at ease with them and felt comfortable
opening up to them. The Arlington Echo facilities were clean and comfortable and even the food was good! I'd strongly
recommend that all Kiwanis clubs sponsor at least one
motivated high schooler to each and every Capital District
Key-Leader
Program.

The 2008 Capital District Convention will be held this year from Thursday, August
14 through Sunday, August 17th in Richmond Virginia at the
Downtown Marriot and the Richmond Convention Center, just
a few blocks from the State Capitol. Hosted by the Heart
of Virginia Region of the Capital District, this year’s theme
is “Prescription For Success,” and one of the big highlights—not
to be missed—is Friday night’s Birthday Party at the Marriott
to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the District Convention.
The
final version of the proposed Strategic Plan for our District
will be presented to the House of Delegates for ratification
at
DCON
2008 in
Richmond,
VA
this
summer.
Once
ratified
by the District delegates, the plan belongs to the District
membership and the District Board will be charged with executing
it.
