Cardinal
Keeler to Speak to Baltimore City Club
by Mike Schaefer, Pres.
Cardinal Keeler (right), a prince
of the Catholic church, 2nd only to the Pope, is a
native of San Antonio, Texas, will be speaking to the
Kiwanis Club of Baltimore City on May 29th at our club
meeting 12:15 to 1:30pm at Germno's Restaurant in Little
Italy (300 S. High St.) in Baltimore. Cardinal Keeler
has known several popes, is recently retired as Archbishop
of Baltimore and is one of over 90 cardinals who voted
to elect the present Pope, Benedict XVI. Cardinal Keeler
will speak to the club about the Pope's recent visit
to New York and Washington, DC. He will also talk about
other Popes he has met in his historic role as one
of America's Cardinals. This is the first time a church
official of such rank has visited a Kiwanis Club, and
the worldwide organization that we are, Kiwanis International
is expected to give some good coverage to the event.
We welcome any Kiwanians to our $20 luncheon. As a
Kiwanis leader I have presented boxing champ Archie
Moore, comics Tommy Smothers and Bob Saget, popcorn
king Orville Redebacher and Casino Mogul Steve Wynne. But neve a Cardinal. There is a serious
problem, what do I do for an encore?

The 2008 Capital District Convention will be held this year from Thursday, August
14 through Sunday, August 17th in Richmond Virginia at the
Downtown Marriot and the Richmond Convention Center, just
a few blocks from the State Capitol. Hosted by the Heart
of Virginia Region of the Capital District, this year’s theme
is “Prescription For Success,” and one of the big highlights—not
to be missed—is Friday night’s Birthday Party at the Marriott
to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the District Convention.
The
final version of the proposed Strategic Plan for our District
will be presented to the House of Delegates for ratification
at
DCON
2008 in
Richmond,
VA
this
summer.
Once
ratified
by the District delegates, the plan belongs to the District
membership and the District Board will be charged with executing
it.
