St
Mary's County Kiwanian Glynnis Schmidt Honored
by Bob Owen
Recently the St. Mary's
County Human Relations Commission held it's 22nd annual
awards ceremony to honor four county residents for
their contributions to county citizens by designating
these outstanding individuals as "Everyday Heroes". Of this group of four very special people, one was a Kiwanian deeply committed
to service leadership. Her name is Glynnis Schmidt
(right).
To say that Glynnis Schmidt has a passion for community service and a calling to reach out to young people is an understatement. Ms. Schmidt's zealous participation in the Kiwanis International family of clubs dates back to 1992 while attending Shippensburg University in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Geo-Environmental Studies. As a college student she was a member of Circle K International. More recently, she has been a member of the Kiwanis Club of St. Mary's County since 2004 and currently holds a seat on the Board of Directors.
If you want a clear picture of who Glynnis Schmidt truly is, simply ask a young person involved in one of the Service Leadership Programs. "Ms. Glynnis", as she is known by the kids, voluntarily serves as the Chair of the Service Leadership Programs Committee. She is also the Kiwanis Advisor to the Circle K International Club of St. Mary's College. She coordinated the formation and charter of the Builders Club within the Spring Ridge Middle School Boys and Girls Club, and has supported the Kiwanis K-Kids Club within the Lexington Park Elementary School Boys and Girls Club. She also currently is working with faculty and administrators at Great Mills High School to form a Key Club there.
During the years 2006 and 2007, Ms. Schmidt represented her club at the Capital District Kiwanis Conventions and the Capital District Circle K Conventions. She is a tireless and enthusiastic advocate for youth and has the ability to relate to children, teens, young adults, parents and school officials. Her genuine warmth and kindness easily shines through and has earned her the respect and affection of all she encounters through her work with Kiwanis.
Additionally, Ms. Schmidt has been involved in raising funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society since 2004. She has been a Light the Night Walk participant and has served as Team Captain for the Kiwanis Family team. Her individual fundraising efforts alone have reaped close to $4,000. Her dedication to service is an inspiration to those who know her. She does all this while sharing her life with her husband Bruce and enjoying motherhood with their son, Aaron, age 4. Her never-ending capacity to put others before herself makes her "an everyday hero" to many youth and families in St. Mary's County. In addition to the county award, she was also recognized by presentations sent from Congressman Steny Hoyer, and Senator Barbara Mikulski.
