William
and Mary CKI Successfully Strikes Out ALS!
by Tanya Sperling Capital District CKI Secretary-Treasurer
April 19th, 2008 turned
out to be a beautiful day in Williamsburg, VA. With
not a single cloud in the sky, W&M CKI headed to Plumeri Park to Strike Out ALS. Our goal this year was to raise
$5,000 for the ALS Association MD/DC/VA Chapter and
we did just that! Through generous sponsorships from
Kiwanis clubs in Division 23 and 13, business donations,
ticket sales, and raffle donations W&M CKI raised the money to donate once again. Our club also took part in a profit
share with our local Uno's who let us earn up to 20%
of the checks with an ALS ad attached for the entire
week before the game. But Uno's did not stop there,
they came out to the game and handed out delicious
samples of Uno's pizza.
Key clubbers from local
high schools, Kiwanians, CKIers, William and Mary students,
and local community members packed the stands to make
the game the second-highest attendance at Plumeri Park
Baseball Stadium since it opened. CKIers wore bright
red Strike Out ALS tee shirts and raised awareness
about what ALS is and how the donations would be used
to further research to find a cure.
W&M CKI would especially like to recognize the Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg for their continued support of this event. Their generous sponsorships and words of encouragement are especially appreciated by members of W&M CKI.

The 2008 Capital District Convention will be held this year from Thursday, August
14 through Sunday, August 17th in Richmond Virginia at the
Downtown Marriot and the Richmond Convention Center, just
a few blocks from the State Capitol. Hosted by the Heart
of Virginia Region of the Capital District, this year’s theme
is “Prescription For Success,” and one of the big highlights—not
to be missed—is Friday night’s Birthday Party at the Marriott
to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the District Convention.
The
final version of the proposed Strategic Plan for our District
will be presented to the House of Delegates for ratification
at
DCON
2008 in
Richmond,
VA
this
summer.
Once
ratified
by the District delegates, the plan belongs to the District
membership and the District Board will be charged with executing
it.
