Holley’s Heroes — Together we CAN, Together we WILL

Gov. Yvonne Holley

Several successful events and a new club formation made for a wonderful and fulfilling April.

I had the pleasure of attending and participating in this year’s Key Club Convention. I take this opportunity to thank Key Club District Administrator Joe Stankus, Assistant Administrator Bill Hand, Key Club Governor Shannon Longest and the Key Club Board for organizing such a fantastic Key Club Convention. It was obvious that many countless hours were spent working to ensure that their Convention was fun, meaningful and a positive experience for all. There were 700 Key Clubbers, representing 84 clubs; and 124 Kiwanians and advisors present to help celebrate 60 years of Key Clubs’ existence in the Capital District. . Held at the Richmond Marriott during the weekend of April 7-9, this was the District’s 60th year sponsoring key club, but the 57th annual Key Club Convention. Congratulations to Governor Peter Simasek and the new Board that was elected.

A new Kiwanis flower bloomed during the month of April. On April 20, during the Council Kiwanis Club Charter Night event, I had the privilege of presenting club President, Kathy Jackson, with the Club’s Charter. Council is the second Kiwanis Club to be organized and chartered during our Kiwanis administrative year and it is the first club to be chartered in Division Eight in eighteen years. Thank you all for helping us to get closer to our vision of 1000 new members by the end of this administrative year. Keep up the good work everyone.

Congratulations to the Planning Committee and Lt. Governors Jon Rife, Jim VanHoozier, and Lloyd Enoch for a successful Southwest Regional Conference April 21-22 at the Mountain Lake Resort in Pembroke, VA . The Mountain Lake Resort was a beautiful site for the Conference. But I must say, “the long drive up the steep mountain road, proved to be somewhat challenging for many who made the drive, including yours truly.” The Friday evening reception, dinner, and entertainment were an excellent opening for the Conference. Saturday’s agenda was full with training sessions, a luncheon and a candidate forum. One hundred Kiwanians and guests enjoyed the beautiful Mountain Lake Resort for the two day conference.

I express sincere gratitude to Booker and Mary McManus for coordinating a very successful Kiwanis Go-to-Church Sunday event held April 22 at the Annapolis Naval Academy Chapel. Sixty-four Kiwanians and guest attended the inspiring worship service, followed by a fellowship brunch at the Academy Officers’ Club. Please be reminded that May 14 is the date for all Regions to observe Kiwanis Go-to-Church Sunday. It is not too late to plan an event, if you have not already made plans to do so.

Attending a funeral is always very difficult for me. However, last week, I found the will and the desire to attend the funeral of a well known, well loved and well respected Kiwanian, Sid Hias. I walked away from the service feeling that I missed a great opportunity not getting to know such an inspiring individual.

Division 22 Service Leadership Program Night, held April 28, was a fun-filled evening. There were almost two hundred members from our Service Leadership Programs present and a representative from each K-Kids, Builders Club, Key Club, Circle K Club and Aktion Club presented a short report on their activities. Many, many service hours are provided by these individuals. The evening was complete with a delicious buffet dinner, lots of door prizes, games, and even a DJ for dancing. I found myself on the dance floor a couple of times trying to keep up with our youths.

Thank you Divisions 7/11 members, Division 7/11 Lt. Governor-elect Rose, Division 15 Governor-elect Barbara, Trustee Walt and new member Roberta for making the PEPC training so delightful. You were al so helpful. Your participation was wonderful. You made my job, as the trainer, extremely easy.

We continue to keep the countless individuals, suffering because of Hurricane Katrina, in our thoughts. The evidence is the $3,170 check I recently received from the Suburban Norfolk Kiwanis Club for the purpose of serving children who were victims of the horrific storm. To date, we have contributed approximately $100,000 to the Kiwanis International Foundation for the Katrina Relief Fund. WE HAVE DEFINITELY MADE A DIFFERENCE in the lives of many.

The April statistics are on the District web site. It is good that 538 new members have come into the Capital District since October 1, but we still have a net loss of 32 members. I am also happy that every club in Divisions 5, 22 and 23 recruited at least one new member so far, but 53 clubs have not reported a new member.

I commend the following Lt. Governors for the positive growth in their division: Doris Montgomery, Division 1 (+38); Al Meadows, Division 23 (+24); Jon Rife, Division 8 (+23); John Buchanan, Division 22 (+17); Don Hamilton, Division 11 (+10); Doc Thrush, Division 16 (+6); Jim VanHoozier, Division 3 (+3); Jeanne McAllister, Division 5 (+2); and Lankford Smith, Division 21 (+1).

I will echo the words of Immediate Past Governor Warren Kane when he said, “Our goal is for every club to finish PLUS ONE on September 30. That will only happen if every Kiwanian is PLUS ONE in bringing in a new member, or at least bringing a prospective member to your club. Now is the time to kick our membership campaign into high gear, before summer vacations are upon us. September will be too late. ASK a prospective member to come to your club today, or no later than tomorrow.”

Convention Update: We currently have 149 members and 45 guests registered for the International Convention in Montreal, which is 48.26% of our attendance goal of 402. It is still not too late to register for the Convention.

Reminders:

  • May 4 is National Day of Prayer
  • Children Miracle Network Telethon is scheduled to be held the first weekend in June and hopefully clubs are planning to participate and support this annual campaign. Many clubs have a line item in their budget for this event and hopefully those of you who have not budgeted for this will consider supporting the cause.
  • Most of the District’s states are conducting HOBY seminars during the month of May. As in the past, clubs are asked to support this worthwhile leadership conference by sponsoring a student as an ambassador to attend their local conference.

I STILL BELIEVE! 1000 members and 8 new clubs by September 30.

Request for Input RE: Ford Gum & Machine Co. Fund Raiser

Firewood Project of Botetourt Kiwanis Club

Irving Glover

The Firewood Project of Botetourt Kiwanis Club will soon get a big boost from the apple trees of Layman Brothers Orchard. As Fralin & Waldron begin clearing the land for the initial phase of Daleville Town Center, the wood of the old apple trees will provide one last harvest. However, this will be a harvest of warmth for those in Botetourt County who need firewood next winter with which to heat their homes.

On Saturday, May 20th, Botetourt Kiwanis will coordinate Project Applewood. The good wood will be harvested and hauled to the Kiwanis storage site. The rain date for this phase of the project will be June 10th.

One Kiwanian is quoted as saying “we envision a community event similar to the old fashioned barn-raising where neighbors can help neighbors help neighbors.” Thus the opportunity presents itself for churches, other community organizations, neighbors and friends to join up with Project Applewood in order to help keep Botetourt warm next winter. Local Kiwanis President, Alma Burch, is quoted as saying “the Kiwanis Club of Botetourt is proud to spearhead this worthwhile project, and we hope that the community will come to aid and stand with us in this endeavor.”

Needed are woodcutters with saws, dump trucks, nimble, agile backs, food and water. If you would like more information about Project Applewood, please call 992-2415, or contact any Kiwanis club member. Your inquiry will be very welcome.

Rockville Kiwanis Club Holds Family Fun Night

Barbara Leurig

The Rockville Kiwanis Club got their hands covered with glitter and glue at the March Family Fun Night at Seneca Heights Apartments. A program of the Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless, the apartment complex provides permanent housing for formerly homeless adults and transitional housing for families exiting homelessness. Family Fun Night is held once a month for the families, encouraging them to have fun together.

The Rockville Club organized the March 29 activity with great success. We had more than 15 children participate with their parents! We took photos of the children with their parents or friends and some even got to hold a real live bunny, brought by member and Animal Exchange owner Ruth Hanessian. After the kids and parents got their own digital photograph, we helped them create homemade picture frames with Popsicle sticks and tongue depressors. They used stickers, crayons, glitter, glue, string, and foam cut-outs to embellish their frames. We made a mess, but everyone had fun! Best of all, we donated all of our art supplies to Seneca Heights for the families to use at future Family Fun Nights.

Kiwanis By the Bay is extremely proud to have the new Lieutenant Governor for Division 13 from our club! Congratulations, Phyllis!
11 Members from Kiwanis By the Bay Attend Convention

Kiwanis Club of Rossmoor Happenings

Jeannette Stabler

The Kiwanis Club of Rossmoor has organized a brand new K-Kids Club at Rosemont Elementary School. They will be having their Charter Night on Tuesday, May 2, at their school, with parents, teachers, siblings, and Kiwanis members attending. They have already accomplished several community service projects while waiting for the charter paper work to arrive from our International office. This will be the very first K-Kids Club in Montgomery County.

The Bingo Night on Monday night, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Rossmoor, has had a wonderful year, and is still having big crowds of Bingo players every Monday night. This is one of our outstanding fundraisers for all of our charities, and it is held in the Ballroom of Clubhouse One at Leisure World. There are usually over one hundred people attending, and on a recent Monday we had 158 people there. The Kiwanis Club of Rossmoor has been sponsoring this fundraiser for over ten years, and plans to continue doing it.

On Saturday, April 22, the Kiwanis Club of Rossmoor held an all-day seminar for high school sophomores. This is an annual event, inspired by Hugh O'Brian, and called HOBY-CLEW COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP. We invite sophomores from all of the Montgomery County high schools for a leadership program, which is designed like the three day seminar held by Maryland HOBY, and attracts a crowd of very active high school sophomores. This is the eighth year that the Kiwanis Club of Rossmoor has sponsored the seminar.

Stafford High School Key Club Holds Chicken Race

Margaret Bridges, Faculty Advisor

The Stafford High School Key Club, sponsored by the Fredericksburg, Virginia Kiwanis Club, raised money for Heifer International by sponsoring a Chicken-faculty relay race. Six willing faculty members, as well as six live chickens teamed up to raise over three hundred and fifty dollars. Money was raised through student sponsorships of their favorite team. The event was held immediately after school and students "flocked" in droves to cheer on the teams. Many of the students got to hold a real chicken for the very first time. Following the race, which was presided over by the "Eat More Chicken" cow from Chik-Fil-A, the chickens were safely returned to their owners. The relay was the idea of outgoing club president, Jessica Guthrie.
Kiwanis Club of Mount Vernon

Derek Dupuis

March and April were very busy months for the Kiwanis Club of Mount Vernon. Our club has continued success on many of our regular service projects and we also found new outlets to serve our community. In March we held our regular food drive outside of our local Safeway. This time, we collaborated with our sponsored Boy Scout Troop and with their help we collected over 960 lbs of food and over $179 for our local food bank (right). We also continued our support our local Good Shepherd Housing program by helping sponsor their annual gala through a donation of $500. In April, four Kiwanis members purchased tickets to the gala to further support their annual fundraiser. In March we sponsored another Bingo game at the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services facility and in April we sponsored a Karaoke Party for at our local Community Youth Center. We continued our support for our sponsored Boy Scout Troop by donating $250 to one of the disabled boys to attend an Easter Seals Camp over the summer.

In addition to our continued service projects, Mount Vernon Kiwanis started several new service initiatives in our community. In an effort to promote physical fitness and extra-curricular activities in our youth, our club sponsored a youth little league baseball team called the Kiwanis Cubs. We also sponsored a youth Running Club in our community. During the recent Spring Break, Mount Vernon Kiwanis sponsored two activities for our area youth. We donated $824 to fund a trip to the local Hemlock Outdoor Experience during the first day of the break. During the last day of the break, our club sponsored a Karaoke party. The Spring Break week began and ended with Mount Vernon Kiwanis!

This month we have also been very active with our Key Clubs. In March we held a joint service project making Baby Blankets with the Hayfield Key Club. We also provided financial assistance for one of our students to attend the Key Club District Convention.

The organization monitors and targets programs for 12 key measures of health and wellness for county residents. The club then responded by pledging and providing a contribution to TPHHC's upcoming annual Youth Fair, "Party in the Park" whose objective is to build better relationships and mutual respect among teens and adults. Several Mt. Airy Kiwanians plus parents provided landscaping manpower on Saturday, April 29 to Twin Ridge Elementary School in Mt. Airy. The club's Youth Services Committee coordinated the involvement of the club in the School's Spring Cleanup along with PTO members and school staff. A full morning of weeding, planting and mulching was followed by lunch provided by the Mt. Airy club. The results of the Cleanup caused Twin Ridge Principal Davida Foley to comment, "Wow, what a difference this makes. We frequently hear compliments on our landscaping and flower beds, but now everything really looks fantastic!" The Mt. Airy club has adopted the school for ongoing service projects will continue to help with future landscaping projects and cleanup efforts.

Downtown Club Spring Spruce-Up at Sharpe Health School

Vernon Holleman III

The rainy weather and cool temperature did not quell the enthusiasm of our Kiwanis team, Young Professionals, GWU Circle K and the Boy Scouts from pitching in on our Spring Clean-Up at Sharpe Health School on April 22. With the weather against us, we still had a good turn-out, under the able Kiwanis direction of Vernon Holleman III and Dick Juergens, with the leadership of Matthew McDonnell (the Eagle Scout candidate son of new member Steve McDonnell).
Pembroke Kiwanis’ New Member Initiatives Bring Results

During first quarter 2006, Pembroke Kiwanis’ Board of Directors and Officers decided to hold a membership drive which involved inviting Virginia Beach’s Town Center businesses to hear the Mayor give an update on this exciting business district. So far, we have over six new members who first heard about Kiwanis at that meeting. Membership goals for the year also involved developing a strong new member orientation program which involves taking six months to check off important aspects of being a Kiwanian with the support of the new member’s sponsor and mentor, another Club member selected to make their new experience more valuable. (Pictured here at the first New Member Orientation are new member Victoria Brasse’; Nancy Pindur; new member Greg Hayes; new member Amanda Williams, and Bob Miller.)

Kiwanis is Donating Smiles

K.I.D.S. (Kiwanis is Donating Smiles), a project of the Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg and Busch Gardens joins two organizations in brightening the lives of underprivileged children with free visits to Busch Gardens and raising money for local children's charities. Each $20 donated to the Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg Foundation is matched with a free ticket from Busch Gardens for an underprivileged child. In eight years, over 2500 children have spend a memorable day at Busch Gardens. Pictures are Wilbur Davis (left), founder of the K.I.D.S. program and Dave Potter, Busch Gardens marketing director.
