Capital District CKI "Odyssey of Service"
by Past Gov. Bob Bressy

The Kiwanis Mid-Winters have begun for Kiwanis and on February 15-17th, Capital District Circle K International (CKI) had the K-Family's first 2008 Convention entitled "An Odyssey of Service" in Fairfax, Virginia. Don't they just have a great way to present a theme for their DCONs? They are creative and inspiring. Our Service Leadership Programs are the Kiwanis family's most distinguishing trademark. When you see these young people from K-Kids, Builders Clubs, Key Clubs and Circle K CKI perform their magic you are filled with pride and respect. more

Update on District Strategic Plan
by Gov. Elect Tom Ganse

By the time you read this, the proposed Strategic Plan has been reviewed in two increments by the District Long Range Planning Committee, those incremental results have been endorsed by the District Board, and four of the eight District Regions have had the opportunity to attend presentations on "VISION: 20/15", to include the Strategic Plan. Between now and mid-April, all remaining Regions will share in that opportunity. From there, all input from all sources will be considered before the Board endorses a final version of the Plan. That final version will be presented to the House of Delegates for ratification in Richmond this Summer. Once ratified by the delegates, the plan belongs to the District membership and the District Board will be charged with executing it. more

Remembering a Member - Bob Baxter
by Mike Rind

In response to your first question about Kiwanians who have gone the extra mile, something very sad and very beautiful happened recently in our club. It actually suggests something that members of other clubs might want to consider doing.

I'm with the Kiwanis Club of Mountain Road Pasadena. Bob Baxter, our club's oldest member, passed away several months ago at the age of 92 after a rich and full life of community service. Bob had been a dedicated Kiwanian for over 52 years, a beloved member of our club, and a stalwart of the Pasadena community.

When the funeral arrangements were announced, we learned to our surprise that Bob's family had asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to our club. Over $750 was donated to the club in Bob's name. For a small club like ours, these donations will be really helpful. Of course, the money was not nearly as important as the idea behind the gift. I don't know if Bob asked his grandchildren to do this before he passed away, or if they did it on their own. Either way, we were very surprised. It was a beautiful and deeply appreciated gift that will help us continue to serve the community Bob loved. We have renamed in Bob's honor a scholarship that our club gives each year to a local High School graduate.
