Capital District CKI "Odyssey of Service"
by Past Gov. Bob Bressy

The Kiwanis Mid-Winters have begun for Kiwanis and on February 15-17th, Capital District Circle K International (CKI) had the K-Family's first 2008 Convention entitled "An Odyssey of Service" in Fairfax, Virginia. Don't they just have a great way to present a theme for their DCONs? They are creative and inspiring. Our Service Leadership Programs are the Kiwanis family's most distinguishing trademark. When you see these young people from K-Kids, Builders Clubs, Key Clubs and Circle K CKI perform their magic you are filled with pride and respect. more

Update on District Strategic Plan
by Gov. Elect Tom Ganse

By the time you read this, the proposed Strategic Plan has been reviewed in two increments by the District Long Range Planning Committee, those incremental results have been endorsed by the District Board, and four of the eight District Regions have had the opportunity to attend presentations on "VISION: 20/15", to include the Strategic Plan. Between now and mid-April, all remaining Regions will share in that opportunity. From there, all input from all sources will be considered before the Board endorses a final version of the Plan. That final version will be presented to the House of Delegates for ratification in Richmond this Summer. Once ratified by the delegates, the plan belongs to the District membership and the District Board will be charged with executing it. more

First of the K-Family's Big Three DCONs: Capital District CKI "Odyssey of Service"
a Photo Essay by Immediate Past Governor Bob Cressy

Our Capital District Kiwanis family has a number of large scale meetings during the year which focuses our attention on the most important aspects of our K-Family: Service to our communities, providing training opportunities, recognizing our clubs, honoring our retiring leaders and selecting leadership for the next year and of course simply getting together with our friends and enjoying fellowship. They include Mid-Winter conferences and meetings, our Capital District Conventions and then International Conventions.

The best way to showcase them is to be there, at the district conventions. Thanks to those of you who shared the experience with these leaders. And, since 'pictures say a thousand words', what better way than to show some pictures of this year's event in a photo essay. So, here you are: "An Odyssey of Service".

"An Odyssey of Service" is the theme of the 48th Annual Capital District CKI Convention held in Fairfax, VA.
CKI International Representative Kristen Reed from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Potsdam lead a leadership program entitled "Club Resource Center". The wide ranging topics included the Club Officer's Guide, Advisor's Guide, Recruitment Manual, Service Initiative and Club Events Guides, among other topics. This overview gives "how to" tips to lead clubs to success. We learn by sharing our and other's experiences.
Kristen Reed, CKI International rep from SUNY Potsdam (where all that snow is ... I know) enthusiastically leads the interactive program of honing leadership skills.
Over 100 attendees attended the Club Resource Center presentation on Saturday morning with CKI members, plus some Kiwanians, and Kiwanis and faculty advisors to CKI.
"Business Professional" was the dress code of all meeting of the day sessions. There was time for casual dress and formal/business suits at the Governor's banquet, too. I got a kick out of the business attire code which included "Dresses/Skirts: For Females". Sometimes you have to spell it out ... remember?
Traditional and inspiring "Greetings" from the K-Family included 11 year old Kashish Jagga, a member of the Arlington Traditional School K-Kids Club addressing the large audience with confidence, poise and clarity. It does make you proud of them.
Greetings from Builder's Clubs (Middle Schools) Safavi Frey, Westminster School Builder's Club President takes an opportunity to succeed and lead ... and she does!
Sarah Smith, Governor of Capital District Key Clubs brings greetings from Delaware and the whole district to CKI. The Key Club Capital District Convention is upcoming at the Marriott Hotel in downtown Richmond, April 18-20th. Over 800 people are expected to attend. Make sure you support your Key Club by sponsoring/sending members with a club advisor.
Tom French, CKI Zone Administrator from the Williamsburg Kiwanis Club is presented with the prestigious "Frank Fulton Kiwanis Advisor Award' for 2007-2008. With him is Mitra Irdmusa who received the Circle K International "Society of Distinguished Collegians Award. Mitra is the President of CKI at William & Mary College. William & Mary CKI Club was also presented with the "Dale Larson Kiwanis Family Relations Award" by CKI Metro Division Lt. Governor Deirdre Clark who attends The George Washington University in District of Columbia. Not pictured but recognized was Scott Zimmerman of the Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg, VA, who was awarded the "Brownie Brownfield Kiwanian Award" for 2007-2008 presented by Sao-Mai Nguyen-Mau, Battlefield Division Lt. Governor.
No SLP Club will be successful without a strong, motivated faculty advisor. The CKI Advisor of the Year "Tom Larner Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award" was presented to Amanda Denny of Randolf College. Terrific! To her left is Michaela Margida, of the Randolf College CKI Club.
Capital District Governor Art Riley brings Kiwanis greetings, congratulations and expresses our pride in and support of CKI.
There is always time for committee work session projects and exchanges. Here the CKI Community Service workshop meets in the sunny atrium after lunch for their workshop.

Internationally recognized for outstanding service, CKI Capital District Administrator Jeff Wolff, Tyson Corners Kiwanis, guides the DCON process with heart felt expertise. You can tell. Thanks, Jeff!
