Club Donates $250 to Teachers of the Year

At the May 20 meeting
of the Poquoson School Board, the Kiwanis Club of Poquoson
presented checks for $250 each to the newly named Poquoson
School System "Teachers of the Year" in recognition
of their outstanding efforts to educate Poquoson's
youth. Brian Wilson, Kiwanis Capital District Division
23 Lieutenant Governor, representing the local club
president Dr. Larry Svihla, said, ""Your exemplary
efforts...parallel the Poquoson Kiwanis' initiatives
to be a positive influence on our youth and community..."
He continued, "..the Kiwanis Club of Poquoson has been
very involved in the Poquoson School System, with our
ongoing tutoring [math and reading] programs and sponsorship
of the Builders Club and Key Club." The School System
selected the honorees and interim Superintendent Marilyn
Barr, also a Kiwanis member, presented framed certificates
on behalf of the School Board. Patricia "Trish" Boyle
of Poquoson is a special education teacher at the High
School, Rachael Morris of Gloucester is the Art teacher
at the Middle School, Kristy Vicari of Hampton teaches third grade at the Elementary School,
and Melissa Heckle of York County is a special education
teacher at the Primary School. Pictured left to right:

The 2008 Capital District Convention will be held this year from Thursday, August
14 through Sunday, August 17th in Richmond Virginia at the
Downtown Marriot and the Richmond Convention Center, just
a few blocks from the State Capitol. Hosted by the Heart
of Virginia Region of the Capital District, this year's theme
is "Prescription For Success,” and one of the big highlights-not
to be missed-is Friday night's Birthday Party at the Marriott
to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the District Convention.
