Volunteers Judge Showell Elementary Program
by D.L. Landis
Pictured are Kiwanis Club
of Greater Ocean Pines/Ocean City volunteers being
instructed by Showell Elementary School Principal,
Paula Jones, also a fellow Kiwanian, about the criteria
for judging the school's annual Maryland Arts and Essay
Program.
Principal Jones initiated the program in 1992 to help make Pre-K through 3rd grade students aware of the State of Maryland and Worcester County where they live. Students, with the input of parents and teachers, do art projects and/or write essays and poems about Maryland subjects which they choose. The program is not mandatory, but most students do participate. Since it's inception, the local Kiwanis Club has judged the entries for this program. In addition, Kiwanis volunteers, having all sorts of backgrounds, have judged the annual Showell Elementary Science Fair.
Judging was done Tuesday May 6th at the school and took about 15 Kiwanians and special guest, Carol Ludwig, Executive Director of the Ocean Pines Chamber of Commerce, several hours to complete. It's unbelievable the information and detail that the children provide. What a treat and what a program. Just another way that local Kiwanis Club pursues the goal of Kiwanis: "Serving the Children of the World".

The 2008 Capital District Convention will be held this year from Thursday, August
14 through Sunday, August 17th in Richmond Virginia at the
Downtown Marriot and the Richmond Convention Center, just
a few blocks from the State Capitol. Hosted by the Heart
of Virginia Region of the Capital District, this year's theme
is "Prescription For Success,” and one of the big highlights-not
to be missed-is Friday night's Birthday Party at the Marriott
to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the District Convention.
