Salem
Club Holds Fishing Rodeo
by Bud Plymale
We completed a yearly project for the City of Salem Recreation
Department. A Fishing Rodeo is held at the Duck Pond in
downtown Salem. This Rodeo was organized a long time ago
to honor
one of our members and one of our state congressmen. The
gentlemen's name as we all knew him was Earnest "Pig" Robertson.
He loved kids and was very popular in our city of Salem.
Our Kiwanis Club helps to buy a large supply of fish to stock
the pond for the Rodeo. The Rodeo is held on two Saturdays
in May. The first Saturday is for 6-11 year old kids and
the second Saturday is for 12-16 year old kids. Our club
cooks and serves hot dogs with chips and cold drinks on the
side. They all love the hot dogs. We all love to see the
hugh smiles on the kids' faces when they catch a big 12"-15" trout fish and it is doing its best to get away from everyone. Some of they
kids come out with a string of fish that would make a grown-up
proud. This is a big day for the kids in our city. This
is only one our many projects each year that keep us active
in our organization.

The 2008 Capital District Convention will be held this year from Thursday, August
14 through Sunday, August 17th in Richmond Virginia at the
Downtown Marriot and the Richmond Convention Center, just
a few blocks from the State Capitol. Hosted by the Heart
of Virginia Region of the Capital District, this year's theme
is "Prescription For Success,” and one of the big highlights-not
to be missed-is Friday night's Birthday Party at the Marriott
to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the District Convention.
