| Hylton High School Key
Club Awarded Charter
At its last meeting,
on the afternoon of June 4, 2008, the Hylton Senior
High School Key Club was awarded its Charter from
Kiwanis International. The Hylton Key Club is sponsored
by the Woodbridge (VA) Kiwanis Club. Thanks to
the efforts of the Club's two Faculty advisors,
Sarah
Smits and LeAnn Strang, and the Club Officers,
the Hylton Key Club has had a remarkable year of
supporting
their school and community. Their accomplishments
during the year included the following: implementation
of a weekly "Happy Thoughts" table, participating in the Homecoming Bonfire and in the ARC Halloween Dance,
supporting ACTS (Action in the Community Through
Service), Operation Turkey, visiting the Ruxton
Retirement Home, conducting bake sales, purchasing
and distributing
of food to the Winter Drop- in Shelter, conducting
a Book Drive for the Juvenile Detention Home, supporting
the Sandwich Day for the Winter Drop-in Shelter, The ceremony ended differently than most ceremonies, as a "tornado watch" was issued for the community and we were told to go to a room that did not have any windows. The group split and the banner stand ended up in the designated room and the new banner arrived some time later. When the Club was finally reassembled, the Faculty Advisors presented Certificates of Achievement to members of the Club. The Woodbridge Kiwanis Club congratulates the Hylton Key Club on a very successful first year and hopes that future years will be just a successful and rewarding! |
| Lil Keys, Faculty Advisor
for Woodbridge High School Key Club, Honored
At the June 19 meeting of the Woodbridge Kiwanis Club, Lil Keys, a long time Faculty Advisor for the Woodbridge Senior High School Key Club, was awarded a Distinguished Service Plaque, for her outstanding service to the Key Club and to the community. The Woodbridge Club has been an outstanding organization, with many school and community activities, throughout the years; however, one of their most significant accomplishments occurred this year, when they awarded a $500 memorial scholarship in the name of Daniel Perez Cueva, who was killed in the VA Tech shootings. Daniel was a student at WSHS for a couple of years before moving to Hylton HS, where he graduated. The Key Club awarded the scholarship to Vicente Giron Mazariegos, an English Student of Other Languages (ESOL). Lil and her husband are retiring to a resort community in Tennessee. The Woodbridge Kiwanis Club thanks Lil for all her many accomplishments as the Faculty Advisor of the Key Club and wishes her the best in her retirement! |
