Francisco Loza is returning with Huichol artist Macario Carrillo, traveling from Mexico to exhibit their spectacular Arte en Estambre, a technique developed by the Huicholes in the Sierra Madre mountains, pressing brightly colored yarn onto beeswax-covered boards. Loza's yarn paintings reflect the Huichol culture and images from Mexican life. Incorporating colorful beads, Carrillo's pieces narrate Huichol mythology and present-day prophecies. New artistic visions by local youth in Loza's workshops, and art from the Baltimore American Indian Center's Youth Program, facilitated by Ashley Minner, bridge native and Latin American cultures. On view during SalsaPolkaLooza, our neighborhood international Streetfest!
The East Baltimore has truly become an "International Village" with almost every nation represented in its inhabitants, restaurants and stores. What on earth unites them as Americans? Only freedom can work such miracles.
