Waldorf
Club Donates School Supplies, Builds Handicap Ramp, Attends
KI CON
by Millie Kriemelmeyer
The Kiwanis Club of Waldorf
donated 25 bookbags filled with school supplies to
the Waldorf School Head Start graduates. President
Kelley Jennings made the presentations to the excited
children, who will attend kindergarten in the fall,
during their graduation ceremony on June 6. The Club
also provides holiday meals to some of the families
of these children at Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
The projects for the Head Start program help fulfill
the Club's Young Children: Priority One service requirement.
On Saturday, June 21 (hot
and humid), sixteen dedicated Kiwanis Club of Waldorf
amateur carpenters (and two professional carpenter
volunteers) built a 24-foot long
ramp with an 8 x 10
foot deck for an elderly invalid, Mr. Jones, who lives
in rural Charles County. Now, he is able to be moved
from home to medical services. Also, in case of home
emergency, he can be removed from the house. Materials
were purchased by the Charles County Community Services
Department, while all labor was voluntary. Mrs. Jones
blessed the workers with a bountiful lunch on her cool,
screened back porch. She was thankful and grateful
to have the ramp for her husband. The Club has built
more than twenty handicap ramps over the past years.
This ramp was the second one the club built this spring.
Any club who would like to learn how to build a ramp
should contact the Kiwanis Club of Waldorf Community
Service Chair, Harry Kriemelmeyer, 301-372-8766, hkriemel@radix.net.
Four members of the Kiwanis Club of Waldorf attended the Kiwanis International
Convention in Orlando, Florida: Jerry Peuler, Jr. Harris,
and Millie and Harry Kriemelmeyer, Jr. In the photograph,
they are sitting in the convention hall waiting for
the Bob Newhart Show to begin.
