by Rosemary Cummings
Rehoboth Beach Kiwanis Club new member Robert (Bob) Bacon
did not stand a chance. It is a good thing he has a keen
sense of humor. Kiwanian Alin Buckley was persistent when
she ASKED Bob to join Kiwanis each day he came to the YMCA
to pick up his young granddaughter Natalie. When fellow Garden
Club member, Rosemary Cummings held about his granddaughter,
she told him about Kiwanis at meetings and even told him
about the service work he could perform with the local K-Kids
Club near his home. After a year of thinking about it, he
submitted his application to join. At his induction, there
was his sponsor Alin Buckley on one side and Club President
Rosemary Cummings on the other side, leading the induction.
He proudly received his Kiwanis Cap and certificate from
Rosemary as Alin affixed his membership pin.
Born in New Hampshire, Bob has a BA from the University of New Hampshire, a Masters of Divinity and a BSN from Georgetown University. For over 25 years, Bob has been in Nursing, specializing in Home Health Care. He is married to Joan Lott over 20 years, has two daughters and one son who live in DC, two grandchildren and one on the way. He relocated to Ocean View, DE from Silver Spring, MD where he stays active in politics and pursues his love of gardening. His interest in gardening goes back to the days when his family had an old New England Hotel where he learned many ways to keep things growing. Two interesting facts he shared. One, the use of white vinegar as a "green way" to get rid of weeds and two, use a pail with sand and motor oil to keep your garden tools clean and rust-free. Both tips really do work.
When asked why he joined Kiwanis, he said, "Because Kiwanis deals with kids and as a grandfather, the focus on children is important to me". He indicated he is anxious to learn more about Kiwanis, so he knows where he can best serve. He hopes to attend Club meetings regularly to hear the ongoing new member orientation the Club conducts. He hopes to work with other Club members in the Club's Annual Fundraiser, parking cars for the Rehoboth Beach Fourth of July fireworks.
