Eight
Division 23 Clubs Donate $8500 to Children's
Hospital
by Joe Discenza
The Kiwanis Club of Poquoson joined the seven other clubs
of the Kiwanis Capital District's Virginia Peninsula Division
23 in contributing a total of $8,500 for the Children's Hospital
of the King's Daughters (CHKD), in the Children's Miracle
Network television fund raiser on June 1st. Kiwanis clubs'
support of CHKD is nothing new. The emergency department
of CHKD was named the Children's Kiwanis Emergency Center
in recognition of an historic fund raising effort by Hampton
Roads Children's Kiwanis Emergency Center Foundation.
Established in 1991, the Foundation first raised $1 million to endow the emergency room. Next came a $100,000 donation for an "ouchless" (less intimidating) emergency room. Over the past five years the clubs of the Hampton Roads Region have raised over $300,000 to fund a new emergency vehicle. This new transport vehicle is more than an ambulance. It is equipped to provide full ICU functions for children of all ages for transfer between hospitals. Fixtures include an incubator for neo-natal patients and life-sustaining equipment for children up to teenage years. Pictured in front of the CHKD entrance are former Poquoson Club President and second-term Division 23 Lt Governor Brian Wilson (left) and Steven (Smokey) Allen, of the Kiwanis Club of Tabb.
