Warren
H. MacDonald, WWII POW
by Rosemary Cummings
Warren
H. MacDonald, an active Rehoboth Beach Kiwanis member
for over 25 years died December 17 at age 85. Mac served
as
Club Secretary in 1987, KNews editor for many years
and as Club President in 2004-5. He received the Hixson
Award
in 2006 and the Legion of Merit Award in 2007. He also
served as Rehoboth Beach Foundation President 2005-2007.
Mac was a WWII B24 pilot shot down December 6, 1944
in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia. He spent the remainder of
the war as a POW in Stalag Luft One, a prison camp for
aviators.
He worked for the American Legion and the Department
of Veterans Affairs. He lived in Dewey Beach, DE and
later
in the Rehoboth Beach area for many years after retiring
from civilian Gov’t service. He served the city of
Rehoboth Beach on the Planning commission and as a Commissioner
from 1992-1995. A member of the Rehoboth Historical
Society,
he was a noted authority on the history of Sussex County,
DE who could regale listeners with stories about the
area.
The most poignant memory for the Club members was when as the speaker for the luncheon meeting December 6,
2005, he retold the story of his capture December 6,
1944 and internment as a WW II POW near the Baltic
Sea. Tears
were in everyone’s eyes. Always a sense of humor, he
wrote home after his capture, "Well, I always wanted
to see Europe."
In failing health the past two years, he still attended
meetings despite the need for a wheel chair and later
he learned to use his artificial leg. He was truly
a model
Kiwanian.
