LaPlata Club Holiday Activities
by Judi Gorney

LaPlata Club Collects Toys

The Kiwanis of LaPlata Club collected food and toys during the months of November and December. The attached picture shows our member, Jonnie Mann, with the food she delivered to Angel's Watch in Hughesville, Maryland. Angel's watch is a shelter for battered and abused women in Charles County. The toys we collected at our meetings were delivered to the Greater Waldorf Jaycees' local Toys for Tots program. Along with our chapter's individual donation of toys, two of our members went shopping with money from our club's funds. Jonnie Mann and Judi Gorney decided to shop for the older group of children who are invited to the Toys for Tots program. Judi and Jonnie came up with some great ideas buying an additional 60 items ranging from watches, jewelry, weight lifting equiptment, hats, perfume, basketballs, and dry erase boards, just to name a few! Our members really enjoyed being able to help others during the holiday season and we're looking forward to doing it again in 2008!

LaPlata Club Giftwrap Fundraiser

This year the Kiwanis of LaPlata Club ventured out and tried a new fundraiser! Our local Borders Book store allows our community civic organizations to wrap purchases for their customers, free of charge, during the month of December. Most everyone leaves a donation in exchange for their wrapped gifts! It doesn't cost the clubs anything except man-power. Borders provides the wrapping paper, tape, ribbon and scissors! For three days we provided the man-power and nimble fingers! Borders even provided the sign telling their customers what club was doing the wrapping. During the hours of operation, the manager of Borders would make an announcement that told cusomers that there was free wrapping at the front of the store and announced the name of the group. What a great way to let people HEAR the NAME KIWANIS! A big thank you goes out to our wrappers: Judi Gorney, Jonnie Mann, Linda Parong, Bonnie Morris, Joyce and Chris Ripley, Donna Avery, and Betty Lindsey!
