Chris
Mais, secretary of the Charles County Kiwanis Club,
recently received the South
Atlantic Division - American Cancer Society's Award
of Excellence for Mission Delivery (right). This
award is presented
to an outstanding volunteer who demonstrates exceptional
work and who has been instrumental in support of activities
resulting in a significant impact on one or more of
the ACS Mission Delivery Outcomes in the local community.
Additionally, she was recognized for her work with
the
ACS Reach-to-Recovery program, which provides one-on-one
contact to women recently diagnosed with breast cancer
by other breast cancer survivors.
Mais has been an ACS advocate and volunteer for 13 years. She first began with Relay for Life in 1995, and as a breast cancer survivor since 1996, a volunteer with the Reach to Recovery program. As Charles County's Reach-to-Recovery coordinator since 2003, her goal is to ensure all newly diagnosed breast cancer patients have someone to walk with them on their way to recovery and ensures Reach volunteers in the county receive training and support. As a leader with the ACS Reach program, she has recruited over 15 women as volunteers.
She promotes the ACS mission and Reach-to-Recovery at all major venues in the county, including the Partnerships for a Healthier Charles County, of which she is a member of the Cancer Team. She is also a founding member of The Pink Ladies, a breast cancer survivors group.
As the executive assistant to the deputy superintendent of Charles County Public Schools, she continues to be an outstanding supporter for ACS Relay for Life and the annual ACS campaign, Daffodil Days, for which she was named Top Coordinator in 2007. She continues to serve ACS on the Region Leadership Council and is a prominent figure in other areas of the local community including the superintendent's representative to the Board of the United Way of Charles County, as well as secretary of the Charles County Kiwanis Club. In 2006, Mais was recognized by the Charles County Chamber of Commerce as "Working Woman of the Year" for her outstanding contributions to the community and workplace.
