Wilmington Mayor James Baker, a member of the Wilmington,
DE Kiwanis Club, reads to a Head Start youngster, joining
12 other Kiwanians to launch the "Give
Kids a Reading Start" program, now in its 5th year. This year, as in past years, each Head Start youngster
received a bag of books, books they can take home and call
their own. The Wilmington club partners with Read-Aloud Delaware,
supplying books and teaching material, in an effort to foster
love of reading at an early age.
Since its inception, $20,000 has been used to buy the books,
and many Wilmington club members have read one-on-one to
the children each year. Phil Arendall, a past president,
has spearheaded the project from the very beginning.
