Governor Art Riley and First Lady Vickie Visit Southwest Region

It's a long trip from Westminster, MD to the far corner of the Capital District's Southwest Region, but Governor Art and his wife, Vickie, spent the weekend prior to Thanksgiving doing just that -- as part of their official visits to Region 2, 3 and 8. By all measures, the trip was a success. more

Lexington Kiwanis Club Has New Program to Serve Local Children
by Debbie Chalkley

"The Military Child" strives to brighten the lives of children of locally deployed military. Feeding off of a current project in the area, The Care-Box Project, which sends packages to our locally deployed individuals, we contacted that group to inquire about children in those families. We know that currently there are programs in place to support qualified families who need food, clothing, or health care to all applicants. But, "The Military Child" program is different in that our goal is to supply very specific desired items or services to these children. For example, perhaps one of these military children would like a specific clothing item or toy that doesn't quite fit into the budget, or tutoring, or sporting event tickets, etc. Those are the items the Lexington Kiwanis Club would love to provide. Some of our families are now headed by grandparents or other family members who have stepped in to support their loved ones. If we can provide a little joy to the situation and perhaps even a little peace of mind to the service member, then, we feel as though we have achieved our goal! Even though the program is brand new, we have already served one local family who has three children. We are proud to be a part of this project.
