Governor Art's Corner
by Gov. Art Riley
Albert
Einstein said, "It is every man's obligation to put back into the world at least the equivalent
of what he takes out of it." It is an honor to work with the women and men of Kiwanis because each of you
believes in this principle. As Vickie and I travel
through the Capital District we see many examples of
giving back
to Kiwanis communities. One significant example of
giving, for which each Capital District Kiwanian can
take credit,
are the donations the Capital District Foundation makes
to the seven Pediatric Trauma Hospitals within the
Capital District. During the Governor's visit to Divisions
2 & 3, Vickie and I (right) were privileged to witness the work of the staff at
Roanoke Community Hospital. Dr. Clinton Cavett gratefully
acknowledges
that Kiwanis contributions have a positive impact on
the care of the pediatric patients. Many of these patients
are "fighting" for life from birth and often face multiple surgeries when they are less than
30 days old. The equipment that Kiwanis funds purchase
assist the more efficient patient care.
As we enter this holiday season it seems appropriate that we focus even more on the opportunities that Kiwanians have to contribute to the "children of the world." As Kiwanians we are excellent in raising money through varied projects and returning it to the community. However, I would ask each Capital District Kiwanian to consider making a contribution that will assist children you may not directly see. The Kiwanis International Foundation and the Capital District Foundation address the needs of children in a variety of ways through local Kiwanis Clubs. There is much more work that can be accomplished if the endowments of these foundations can be increased. The International Foundation will be able to respond more effectively to major disasters throughout the world by supporting the efforts of local clubs. The Capital District Foundation has already demonstrated its commitment to support Sponsored Leadership Programs and to see that the pediatric trauma centers are ready to serve when your neighbor, your child or grandchild is in sudden need of life saving services.
A contribution to either of these foundations in the honor of someone or in place of a frivolous gift will help provide benefits to children and youth. These needs range from the child in South America whose local Kiwanis Club is helping to building a school, to the Capital District Key Clubber whose leadership potential will be realized through a convention scholarship. These are the responsibilities of Kiwanians. I have seen the way Capital Cares and now is the perfect opportunity to demonstrate to the extent we care. Contributions to the International Foundation can the send to Neil Behan, 108 Seminary Ridge, Hampton, VA 23669. Contributions to the Capital District Foundation can be sent to Charles Adams, 1601 Charrington Drive, Midlothian,VA 23113.
Remember the words of Thorton Wilder in the Matchmaker, "Money is like manure, it's not worth a thing unless it's spread around and encouraging young things to grow."
Vickie and I wish each of you a Merry Christmas, a joyful holiday season and a new year that brings you personal peace and fulfillment. As you make your New Year's resolution, remember to resolve to bring a new member to Kiwanis and find a new way to serve the children of the world.
