The
Katherine Thomas School spent the morning of October
27th at Shady Grove Rehabilitation
and Nursing Center in Rockville, MD. This is an intergenerational
event with their students spending time with the seniors.
The students provided musical numbers from the 1930s,
40s 50s, and 60s. The parents group provided the costumes
for the musical numbers. The Kiwanis of Olney provided
the Make a Difference Day shirts. Students with high
functioning autism and language/learning disabilities
decorated 144 white bags with an autumn theme that
were filled with goodies including homemade book marks
and pumpkin sun catchers. Students who excel in art
created a piece of work that was donated to the center
in a ceremony after the musical revue. The parents
group provided the funds for framing the pictures.
The high school restaurant class created a fruit salad.
Sam's Club donated the cake with the Make a Difference
logo and the school logo. Bloom Supermarket donated
the pumpkins that were decorated by the students and
placed on display. Giant Supermarket donated the tissue paper for the goodie bags
and ribbon. Some students assisted with the stage crew.
This event is truly allowed the students with special
needs to feel "just like their friends" by giving of themselves on "Make a Difference Day." The members of the Kiwanis of Olney want to congratulate Robin Handleman and
Steven Stoller for a job well done. We were honored
in being a part of such a wonderful event. Pictured
