Kiwanis is about Serving the Children of the World, but since
Kiwanis is a community service organization, there are other
needs, including community projects and services to the elderly,
that also require attention and work.At a recent meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Ocean Pines/Ocean City, members were able to learn about the organization Blind Industries and Services of Maryland, which is a part of the National Federation of the Blind, the voice for the nation's blind. Pictured is Kiwanis Club President Ed Schaefer with Amy Crouse, Rehabilitation Services Coordinator, who works out of offices in Salisbury/MD, and informed the club of programs for adults, especially seniors, who become blind during their lifetime.
Before working for Blind Industries and Services, Amy spent 15 years as a teacher which serves her well in her job of teaching people to cope with a world without sight. Among the tasks taught are learning Braille and how to live independently by learning how to cook, how to use a computer, and how to travel using public transportation to help people continue to do what they always did and enjoyed when not blind or sight depreciated.
Blind Industries and Services of Maryland has meetings once a monthly in the Ocean Pines Ocean City area the 2nd Wednesday of the month from 10 until 11 AM. Watch newspapers for dates or get in touch with Amy Crouse at 410-749-1366 or by e-mail at acrouse@bism.org for further information of if there is someone you know who needs help.
