On October 13 2007, members
of the Poquoson and Tabb Kiwanis Clubs and the Poquoson
High School Key Club joined forces to assist in the
Fifth Annual Mackenzie's 5K MPS fundraising Walk/Run
on the streets of Poquoson. This year's event raised
over $12,000. The five year total is in excess of $100,000.
Every penny goes to the National MPS Society. All supplies
and prizes are donated, so there is zero overhead expenses.
Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) and related diseases are
genetic lysosomal storage diseases (LSD) caused by
the body's inability to produce specific enzymes. Mackenzie
Clarke, a young child in Poquoson, suffers from this
terrible disease, but always manages to attend the
festivities.
