Mid Montgomery County (MD) Kiwanis Club
Clebrates Charter Night

Mid Montgomery County (MD) Kiwanis Club celebrates its Charter Night August 13th at the Golden Bull Restaurant. Division 17 PLG Fred Gaenu helps present the annual President’s Awards to PP Tom Masser (now also the LG Elect -2007-2008 for Division 17) of the North Bethesda Kiwanis Club and to PP John May of the Gaithersburg-Germantown Kiwanis Club by the President Maureen Miller, Mid-Montgomery County Kiwanis Club. Sound confusing? Well they merged to form Mid-Montgomery County and they are doing just fine, thank you
Now its PLG Fred Gaenu’s turn as he receives the Kiwanis International “Legion of Honor” award for forty years presented by President Maureen Miller. Its important, and is appreciated … to give and get recognition by your fellow Kiwanians. Thank you for your service, Fred!
President Maureen Miller is joined by guests First Lady Nancy Cressy and Governor Bob Cressy as they help to honor the Kiwanis Club of Mid-Montgomery County in their home Division 17. An honor indeed felt by Bob and Nancy to assist.
Growth Team Summit
The new “Growth Team Summit” gets underway at a workshop held on the William and Mary College Campus, June 16-17th hosted by TAG Chair Jack White, Abingdon, VA. Jack as TAG (that’s Together Achieving Growth) chair is coordinating the New Club Building committee chaired by PLG Tom Ganse, St. Mary’s Club, plus the Membership Growth & Retention committee, and also shown the Communications, PR and Marketing committee with member John Montgomery, Roanoke Club.
Jackie Bledsoe outlines the Kiwanis International support available now to support New Club Building and membership growth. Jackie served on the Kiwanis International Staff for years traveling the country assisting clubs and is a great asset for the Capital District.
John Montgomery, who has a journalism background, stresses the importance of using the KI professional media tools available to promote Kiwanis and market our “product” – Kiwanis service. The Communications/PR & Marketing Chair is Rosemary Cummings (not shown here) from the Rehoboth Beach Club.
Gov. Bob & Nancy's Official Visit to Div. 2 at Golf Outing
Governor Bob, Nancy and Past Governor Fred Terrill of Lynchburg share the fun with some Kiwanis smiles.
The Golf matches are done for the day … and now time for the Southern style shrimp and ALL the BBQ fixin’s.
PG Fred Terrill, Alexander Heppner, Dave’s son and LG Dave Heppner bag the shrimp for sale in ice bags for guests to buy and take home. Carry them on ice and freeze them in one pound bags. They’ll be great!

For Division 2 and Governor Bob, this was also a Governor’s Official Visit. It was short on talk (but wonderful) and long on food (which was even better … can you imagine?). Shown are LG Dave, son Alexander, Governor Bob and Max Meador doing something official. Having fun and eating is allowed and encouraged. Thanks!
Summertime is for FUN and FOOD! The Lynchburg club and Division 2 hosted their annual Golf Outing and Shrimp Fest on a beautiful Thursday afternoon. Division 2 Interclubs played and feasted on fresh shrimp prepared by “Master Chefs” (l to r) Ed McCann, Lyle Schweitzer, and Max Meador who cook them just right – long enough, but not too long.
“Shrimp’s ready”! SO are we! So, Ed and Lyle serve it up and move them to the buffet line. Lynchburg … does it right! LG Dave Heppner makes a two day trip to Beaufort, SC, to select and drive back the shrimp on ice to ensure freshness. Can’t beat it, says the crowd.
Mitchelleville Charter Night

Highlights of Mitchellville’s “Ten + Two” year Charter Night Anniversary at Andrews AFB. It was a night to honor its members. The club gave an impressive complement to their President Rose B. McClyde by awarding her a $1,000 George F. Hixon medal for her year of leadership. What a great way to honor a person by the Club! Another idea could be a Capital District Founder’s Society medal. Congratulations Rose!

Eight hands … and four hats. Now there also a four cowboy hats. Left to right and ready for San Antonio, PLG JR Harris, Governor Bob Cressy, PLG Booker McManus and Past Governor Jerry Pueler. We’ll have a report for you when we all get back. We were practicing at the Mitchellville Charter Night. Let’s GO!

President Designate Linda Peters, President Rose McClyde and PLG Marie Quick celebrate “Ten + Two” year anniversary at Mitchellville Kiwanis dinner.

Kiwanis Club of Potomac Going Strong

The new Kiwanis Club of Potomac, MD, is going strong! In a June visit Gov. Bob witnessed the club having strong programs, and a service project completed since their start in December. President Jim Chandler will be in San Antonio for the KI Convention, too! Here he is shown, second from left, with the week’s speaker Edgar A. Gonzakz, P.E., Deputy Director for Transportation Policy, Montgomery County, Jim, Thomas Pogue, the county’s Community Relations Manager and club program chair, William Malone. Potomac is the first of three clubs organized so far this year. The second is Kiwanis Club of Bel Air, MD, and the third now organized is the Kiwanis Club of Toano, VA, which will have its Charter Night August 25th.
New Kiwanis Club of Toano Forms!
What’s one of the most exciting events in Kiwanis? Why, forming a NEW KIWANIS CLUB is! The third and newest Capital District club, the Kiwanis Club of Toano, VA, held its organizational meeting on Tuesday, June 26th. CONGRATULATIONS! Newly elected Charter President Gil Via is with Larry Murphy of the sponsoring Williamsburg Club. Thanks to all of you in Williamsburg for sponsoring Toano. President Gil is shown running the FIRST official Board Meeting! Great!
Capital District New Club Building Chair Tom Ganse conducted the superb “by the book” organizational meeting. It works! Kiwanis experience and guidelines can make this a smooth operatation. “That was easy!” Well, LOTS of work but better “by the book”.
