Key Club District Convention |
||
Peter
Simasek, Governor Capital District Key Club International, introduces
Key Club District Convention key note speaker
U.S. Army Colonel D. Gray Heppner at the Key Club District Convention
in Richmond, April 13-15th. Doctor Heppner is the Director of the Division
of Malaria Vaccine Development at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research
in Silver Spring, MD. Note the theme of the DCON is “Ahoy to Service”,
a festive and well-decorated theme throughout the convention. |
COL
and Doctor Gray Heppner presents Governor Peter with the “United States Malaria Research Gold Medal” struck
by the U.S. Treasury for Peter’s leadership in his “Nothing
But Nets” district-wide program. Peter’s team raised over
$12,000 to buy mosquito repellent nets for families in Africa to help
protect them from malaria, a major cause of disease and death in Africa
and Southeast Asia. Other recent recipients of this honor are the Bill
and Linda Gates Foundation and the King of Saudi Arabia for their help
in trying to control this dreaded disease. Now THAT’S good company!
One CAN make a difference! Peter has! |
Kiwanis
Division 2 LG David Heppner, First Lady Nancy Cressy, a Registered
Nurse at Sibley Hospital in Washington, and David’s
brother COL Gray Heppner, the Key Club DCON Key Note Speaker, share the
prospective medical impact of Dr. Heppner’s research. A malaria
vaccine could bring hope of controlling the disease for people in the
affected countries as well as for United States government employees
and military service people, and civilians serving overseas. COL Heppner
will be a featured speaker on Saturday at the Kiwanis Capital District
Convention being held in Rockville, MD, August 16 – 19th. Don’t
miss this! |
Division 24 LG and DCON Co-chair Greer Kelly and
Governor Peter Simasek presided over the Key Club DCON Awards Banquet
with precision and a relaxed flair. The dress code was formal attire
in the Grand Ballroom and was lively with Key Club talent finalist performances
interspersed into division and club award presentations. Nicely done! |
Key
Club DCON Co-Chair, LG Division 18 Nathan Lavinka and Capital District
Kiwanis Governor Bob Cressy share a quick pose after
the Awards Banquet. Nathan and Co-Chair Greer Kelly have terrific charisma
and poise in presiding over the festivities. Every Kiwanian should see
these leaders in action – leaders of today, as well as for tomorrow! |
Congratulations
to Capital District Key Club Governor 2007-2008 Sarah Smith elected
at the 58th Annual Key Club Convention
in Richmond, April 13-15th. Sarah’s proud parents and equally proud
Governor Bob Cressy and First Lady Nancy Cressy share in Sarah’s
shining moment. Over 800 Key Clubbers, Kiwanis and Faculty Advisors and
Kiwanians attended the DCON. |
Kiwanis
Assistant Key Club Administrator Bill Hand and District Key Club Administrator
Joe Stankus share a magical relationship
with our Capital District Key Club members that simply must be seen and
felt to be fully appreciated. Their dedication is well beyond anything
you can imagine – you must experience it. Here they are with LG
2A Lauren Creasy at the banquet. Lauren presided over the Farewell Session
on Sunday morning. |
After the banquet, one more sign of delicious appreciation
for Administrator Joe Stankus: Yep, a nice cream pie nicely administered
by Governor Peter. Peter was pied, too, by his team. Looks good! |
The “Dale G. Larson Faculty Advisor’s
Award” of the year for 2006-2007 was presented to Mary Dick, a
teacher at Varina High School has been a Key Club advisor for six years.
Key Clubs can not exist without effective faculty and Kiwanis advisors.
Their dedication is beyond the call and founded in love and caring. Congratulations,
Mary! Now an idea: Why not invite your SLP faculty advisors to become
an honorary or a full member of your Kiwanis Club? Why not ask them now? |
Kiwanis
Key Club Advisors also are dedicated to the weekly meetings of Key
Clubs and projects. PLG and Advisor “Mr.
Eddie” Koebke, Kiwanis Division 17 Montgomery County, MD, and Suburban
Frederick President Christine Semon, Division 9, are there to provide
guidance from a distance while Key Club leadership runs the show. Thanks
to all advisors! |
Division 9 LG Ellen Huynh is always full of great
energy and most happy to see you. She is sharing the moment with Key
Club Assistant Administrator Bill Hand and Kayla Shipley, who had just
been named a Distinguished Key Club President of the Westminster Club. |
Key
Club Governor Peter with Division 20A LG Colleen McEnearney and District
Treasurer Jason Truwitt, who played a mean “Scott
Joplin” rag time piano in the talent contest. Just great! Now,
go figure. Of course, I knew it was Scott Joplin. Somebody asked if he
was in Key Club! |
Chartering of the Kiwanis Club of Bel Air , MD April 18th,
2007 |
||
One of the most important events for a group of volunteers
is the chartering of a new club. On April 18th thirty three new Kiwanians
became charter members of the newest club in the Capital District, the
Kiwanis Club of Bel Air, Maryland. This has particular importance as
it brings the return of Kiwanis to Bel Air. Left to right, Charter Officers
Treasurer Trish Weiss, President Carl Conway, Capital District New Club
Chairman Tom Ganse and President-Elect Ron Weiss pose with the new style
Kiwanis Club banner. Tom is doing a terrific job of guiding willing people
through the steps of building new clubs in the District. |
Others
instrumental in Bel Air’s formation
include Charter President Carl Conway, of course, Division 12’s
Immediate PLG John Henderson, current Division 12 LG Norton Gettes, Treasurer
Trish Weiss and President Ron Weiss. It takes excited leaders working
together to build a new club. Over 65 Kiwanians and friends attended
the wonderful dinner and well organized ceremony. District Trustee Don
Dudey (not pictured) was the polished master of ceremonies. Well done,
folks! |
A very special treat, Capital District Governor Bob
Cressy congratulates Bill Presberry on his membership in the new Bel
Air Kiwanis Club. Bill has served young people and his community for
thirty seven years as a Kiwanian and, as a matter of fact, Bill was a
charter member of the original Bel Air Kiwanis Club. This tells you two
things: Bill has enjoyed his Kiwanis friends through the years and, second,
situations can change in a community. It was time to re-build a club
in Bel Air again. Take a look at communities where Kiwanis once was;
they can rise again. Congratulations and thanks, Bill, for your commitment
to service. |
Yep,
its quite a group in Bel Air. Why the photo? Some “suspects” for Kiwanis might tell you they can’t
commit due to family obligations. Understandable … to a point.
At Bel Air Kiwanis, no less than seven FAMILY units … you know
husband and wife, brothers or sisters, or other relatives have joined.
So bring your family with you to serve together! Now there’s an
idea. |

Charter Night with 75 new members, it’s the
Key Club of South County Secondary School at Lorton, VA. Charter Co-Presidents
Yena Lee and Debbie Padilla lead with the ever-dependable support of
Kiwanis Key Club District Administrator Joe Stankus. He’s
a great model and inspiration for these young people. Joe is also Kiwanis
LG of Division 4 in the Heart of Virginia Region. |
Every Key Club must have a faculty advisor. South
County Secondary School has two! Ronielle Romney and Sharon Dickens share
the honors, along with sponsoring Kiwanis club Mount Vernon and Kiwanis
Advisor Ben Huh, with Key Club Administrator Joe. |
South County Secondary School Key Club Charter Officers,

The
Kiwanis Club of Washington, DC celebrated its 90th Anniversary
at the Hotel Washington on Saturday, April 21st |
||
The
Club has a long and honored heritage indeed, and is one year older than
the Capital District itself. The new style banner showing the charter
date of May 19th, 1917, displays the old and the new in one look complete
with our emphasis on young children. The “Downtown” club
is among the oldest in the nation and in Kiwanis International. |
Immediate
Past President Andy Alderdice and Current President H. Peter Deede
share some moments of pride in the most recent accomplishments of
club and the traditional community service projects they continue.
Among those are “maintaining an orthopedic clinic to help children
without financial means to receive life enhancing surgery and physical
therapy”. A very major financial contribution is made each
year from the Club’s Kiwanis Foundation. |
Washington,
DC Kiwanis Club President Peter Deede pays respects to the Ninety
Years of Community Service and the leadership of the Club’s
past presidents and other Kiwanis leaders. “We are grateful
to our past Kiwanis leadership who had the foresight to establish
the Foundation to seek contributions that serve us well today.” In
additions to the orthopedic clinic support, the club sponsors the
Joe Riley Youth Leadership Awards luncheon recognizing “20
DC high school seniors who demonstrate exceptional leadership and
good citizenry”. They are each awarded a laptop computer and
the top three are awarded scholarships. |
The
newest club in Washington, the DCYP Kiwanis Club, that’s the “District
of Columbia Young Professionals” were in force with at least a
double interclub to support the Washington club’s 90th birthday.
Thanks! |

2007 Go-To-Church Day |
||
For
more than ten years the Capital District has been attending our “Go-To-Church Sunday” at the United States
Naval Academy Chapel at Annapolis. It was a beautiful day, sunny and
bright, and the ‘chapel’ is more like a cathedral in its
size and splendor. The Navy Chaplin offered prayers for the terrible
tragedy at Virginia Tech and for the Kiwanis family’s loss of VT
CKI member, senior Ryan “Stack” Clark who was killed on April
16th. She also offered prayers for the USN Blue Angle pilot who was killed
the day before in the crash at the air show. |
Thank
you Booker and Mary McManus for again organizing this special day
in Annapolis. Approximately eighty Kiwanians and family members (maybe
more) attended the church services and the brunch that followed at
the U.S. Navy Officer’s Club after the service. Pictured are
Vickie and Gov. Elect Art Riley, Gov. Bob Cressy, Junior Harris,
Tom Wagstaff, PG Jerry Peuler and First Lady Nancy Cressy. Several
other “Go-To-Church” Sunday services are being held throughout
the District. These services recognize our first Kiwanis Object: “To
give primacy to the human and spiritual, rather than the material
values of life”. |
