Governor
Art's Corner
by Gov. Art Riley
The opportunities of April
are before us. These opportunities will allow each
Kiwanian to demonstrate their commitment to the objects
of Kiwanis, show our strength as a K-Family, support
two vital components of the District's SLP program
and renew the dedication to District growth. These
opportunities are highlighted by five different events
during the month.
The first opportunity is for all K-Kids, Builders Club members, Key Clubbers, CKI members, Aktion Club members and Kiwanians to work together on Kiwanis One Day. This is a perfect opportunity to demonstrate to the communities we serve the depth and dedication of Kiwanis service. This will be a perfect occasions to expand an existing community project, initiate a new project and work together to learn about all the talents of the K-Family.
The day after Kiwanis One Day, the primary event of the Capital District's faith awareness weekend is worshipping at the U.S. Naval Academy. All Kiwanians are encouraged to examine and practice their individual faith and primacy to the spiritual rather than the material things of life. Several Kiwanians are going to gather for worship at the United States Naval Academy Chapel during the 11AM service. Any Kiwanian wishing to join this group should meet no later than 10:15 am on the front steps of the Chapel. You can enter the Academy grounds at Gate #3 with a government issued picture I.D. All Kiwanians are invited to join together for brunch at the Loew's Hotel at 12:30 p.m. Reservations must be secured through Marie Quick not later than close of business on April 1, 2008. The $25.00 fee can be paid at the Hotel. See this event flyer.
Key Leader registration is now being conducted for the second Capital District Key Leader weekend. The success of the first Key Leader weekend in October, 2007 promises that this weekend will also be an outstanding experience for the participants as well as the Kiwanians who will be in attendance. Kiwanis Clubs are encouraged to recruit high school students who could benefit from this Service Leadership Weekend. The Key Leader Committee has been working diligently and registration should be completed by April 11, 2008.
During the weekend of April 18-20 Capital District Key Clubbers will gather in Richmond for the annual Key Club District Convention. Kiwanians should avail themselves of the opportunity to witness the great character and accomplishments of our Key Clubbers. Kiwanians can not only observe our Key Clubbers in action, but there are opportunities to help judge the contests that are part of the DCON. The most important function however, will be the support that you will show your Key Clubbers. They will respect and appreciate the support you demonstrate.
Lastly, April and the following 6 weeks are the best time of year to concentrate on Kiwanis Growth and new club building. Members of your communities are waiting to be asked to join Kiwanis. There is great Kiwanis work to be done with more members in your club. Also, there are many communities that want to develop Key Clubs, K-Kids and Builders Clubs, but there are no Kiwanis Clubs close enough to sponsor these efforts. Now is the time to build new clubs and grow the Capital District. All of these April opportunities are the responsibilities of Kiwanians. The time to move from good to great is now.

Final plans are underway for the Second Capital District Key Leader Weekend being
held April 25-27th at Arlington Echo in Millersville, MD.
The menus have been selected, the camp visited by Capital
District Key Leader leadership, and registration well underway.
All we need are for the Kiwanis Clubs to be sure their sponsored
youth participants are getting registered and subsequent
invoices paid.
