Mount
Vernon Kiwanis Club Makes Record Food Collection for UCM
by Paul Mehler
On Saturday, March 22, eight members of the Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club volunteered to spend 2 hours each asking customers entering the Safeway on Hollin Road for dried food donations to be passed on to the Food Pantry of United Communities Ministries (UCM), which runs the large free food distribution center for the underprivileged. The members who manned the two store entrances were Joanne and Bruce Malkin, Mimi and John Nun, Dave and Don Reynolds, Jim Zaletel, and Lee Palmer. Among them they collected 1,439 pounds of non-perishable food items plus $440 in cash and checks that were turned over to UCM on Monday so that even more food can be purchased and given away.

Final plans are underway for the Second Capital District Key Leader Weekend being
held April 25-27th at Arlington Echo in Millersville, MD.
The menus have been selected, the camp visited by Capital
District Key Leader leadership, and registration well underway.
All we need are for the Kiwanis Clubs to be sure their sponsored
youth participants are getting registered and subsequent
invoices paid.
