Kiwanis
Club of Washington Recognizes Students
by David Cox
The Kiwanis Club of Washington, D.C. will again host the Kiwanis Club Joe Riley Youth Leadership Awards on Thursday, May 8, 2008 at the National Press Club, 529 14th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20045 at 12:00 Noon. This awards program recognizes a student from each District of Columbia public school who contributes extensively to the betterment of their community through leadership and scholarship. Candidates are nominated by school faculty and apply by submitting an essay about their leadership role in the community. Financial need also plays a role in the selection of the recipients of these Awards.
The Joe Riley Youth Leadership Awards commemorate the memory of Joe Riley who during his long and distinguished career, volunteered his caring and leadership skills in countless civic and charitable organizations including the Kiwanis Club of Washington, D.C., and its Foundation. The student essays are judged by a team of people from the professional community, the school community, and the Kiwanis organization. Joe Riley's daughter, Michelle Riley Levenson, among others, has long served as a judge for the leadership awards contest. For information on this event, please contact Vernon W. Holleman, III, at 310-656-8389, or Jane Chapman at 202-364-1232.
