CKI Members: Willing and Ready to Help!
by Samantha Staebell, CDCKI Editor

CKI Members are just like any other member of the Kiwanis family, except of course, we are crazy college students! But, you would be surprised to know that we are not as different as you think. We all love to complete service, work with kids, and even work on a few fundraisers. A good relationship with your CKI club can be beneficial for all parties involved. more

Oceal Pines/Ocean City Club and CASA Share Common Goal : CHILDREN
by D.J. Landis

The goal of Kiwanis International is "Serving the Children of the World" and the motto is "Changing the World, One Child at a time".

The local Kiwanis Club of Greater Ocean Pines/Ocean City was privileged to hear from CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) when the CASA Director of the Lower Shore, Bridgette Salisbury (center), and her co-worker, Debbie Dotson (to her right), pictured with Kiwanis Club President Ed Schaefer (to her left), spoke to Kiwanis members about their program in Worcester County at the weekly club meeting in Ocean Pines. CASA is a national organization which has the goal of "Making a Difference, one child at a time". So similar to that of Kiwanis. The common goal being the CHILDREN. CASA is an organization that is made up of volunteers who work as advocates for only one child per volunteer. The children are in foster care.

What do CASA volunteers do? They "gather facts through independent research". They "make recommendations in a written court report to the judge. They "give oral testimony in court, upon request". They "ensure court-ordered services are provided in a timely manner". They "provide emotional support to the child during stressful court proceedings and beyond". They are the advocate for their one assigned child. CASA is funded by United Way. CASA is funded by the county and by the United Way. CASA also raises funds which are then matched by the state. The funds received are then matched by the state. Volunteers are the life-blood of CASA. If you are interested in the opportunity to volunteer with the Lower Shore CASA or would like additional information, please contact them at (410) 641-4598 or by e-mail at lscasa@comcast.net.
